Reality check on the 5th gen reality check.....
Re: Reality check on the 5th gen reality check.....
Ron78Z&01SS I and I believe others are not hung up on weight, but on performance. So with that being said the GTO with a LS2 engine is not out performing a 02 WS6 with an LS1. This is largely due to weight. There in lies the hope of a 5th gen that is at least the same weight or lighter then a 4th gen. With Red Planets statements I think I for one will be happy. MY .02

One more freakin' time people....
Some people actually use these cars to burn corners as they are / were intended. Weight hurts. Extra power can't cover it. Styling tricks can't hide it.
And before it comes up, I don't want to hear about skidpad numbers. That's mostly a function of tire and IMO the 4th gens were undertired for their weight even with the 275/40s.
What really matters is how quickly and easily does the car change direction. In other words, look at the slalom and lane change performance.
I'm going to wait this whole thing out before passing judgement. I'm also probably going to make my first trip to Detroit this winter so I can form an opinion from firsthand inspection.
However, I will say the same two things that I've said since the beginning....
I've bought my last live axle performance car.
I will not buy a 3600lb performance car.

Re: Reality check on the 5th gen reality check.....
haha some of these people should just call up GM and ask them how much a custom made camaro would cost........
Why don't you guys just buy a corvette? Does all of your driving consist of Auto-Xing, track-racing, and seeing how fast your car will slalom (which is impossible for a 3600lb car)? You can buy a used Z06 pretty cheap these days.

Fear of the unknown and the strange obsession with the need for a camaro to be an over achiever in every catagory. I wonder what this forum will be like when or if the F5 comes out?
My guess?
Week one - Ohh my gawd, they did it! yipee
Week two - F5 snobbery and F5 envy
Week three - satisfaction, but if I could just change one thing
Week four - Damn they arent supposed to have these kinds of problems with a brand new car
Week five - I've just done my first mods, this car is quick as hell from the factory and even quicker when I did this.
Week six - Hey guys what do you think about that chrome tape I just put on my coil packs and throttlebody! Looks good doesn't it!
Week seven - GM is stupid as hell for making that widget like that, I broke two making back to back passes, but the fix is in the mail, just wish it didn't cost me XXXX.XX
Week eight - Well I really like the new car, but it just doesnt bring a grin to my face like my old trusty X-gen, so I'm gonna sell it and by a XXXXXXXXXXX.
Week nine - Man I need to do something about the looks of my car, everybody has one now
Week ten - holy crapcino, did you read that, I should have waited to buy my F5 until they came out with the super F5, I wonder if I can get a good deal on a trade in or sell so I can get the super F5.
Week eleven - screw you guys, the F5 is just fine the way it is, if you want that just go buy a XXXXX

Corvette. Yeah, I want one bad but will probably be well into middle age until I can afford one.
Miata, S2000. See Solstice and Sky.
Boxster. See Corvette, Solstice and Sky.

Are you aware of the original Z/28's purpose in life?
Sorry. I'm crabby tonight.

It's nice to have enthusiasm about a WS6, but you are DEAD WRONG!! GTO is a high 4 second car to 60. WS6s run 5 flat on a good day. To top it off, a live axle is better at transmitting power than IRS, which makes it even more dramatic.

The retro theme is a success because it was applied to an already super-successful car.
You're attempting to say that 200,000 people per year are mindless trolls who are simply so mesmerized by the Mustang name that they are going to buy it regardless? That's just plain idiotic logic.
I am a former Mustang owner. Many times over. I happened to like the Mustang's packaging, and the fact it's an all purpose car. You don't drop to the pavement to get in, the car doesn't feel like it takes up mutiple lanes, and the car also appeales to a wider age group and to both sexes.
Saying people buy Mustang just because of the name is like saying if someone loves purple they must love prunes.

Now, on to the real argument,
It's called taking a chance and having trust in your design team. Chrysler did it with their LX cars, and look at their success. If GM doesn't have the ***** to step up to the plate with a truly revolutionary car, instead of a five-year-old copycat(since the basic design has already been said to have been set in stone, this is a definite), then they don't deserve my business. Great, if it's a success, maybe they can do something nice with the sixth gen.
Now, since we have ~5 years to go, maybe my tastes can can change. You never know what can happen in that kind of period of time. But if the car came out right now, I would not buy it.

1. You have not seen the car. You don't know what it looks like. No clue. Yet you are slamming GM and a car that isn't even out yet because of it's design.
2. You talk about Chrysler letting their designers loose, but you aren't aware that GM has done the exact same thing. The Chrysler LX cars design was locked in way before it showed up in showrooms as are all cars.
3. Where do you get "copycat design" from?? You have something we haven't seen yet? If you are judging by some of these photochops done by someone at home hunched over a computer with no connection to GM at all beyond what the neighbor has, I don't know what to tell you.

Guy are you shaking your head at me? I think it is pretyt well confirmed by you and others that IRS is coming along with the 5th gen.
If you are showing contempt for the other guy then ok I agree.

As long as the 5th gen only needs 50-100 more hp than 4th gen, to equal it's performance, who gives a crap??
As long as the 5th gen doesn't lose more than 25% of it's handling and braking over a 4th gen, who gives a crap??
As long as a the 5th gen's fuel economy isn't 10mpg less than the 4th gen, who gives a crap??

There's no chassis. The car is least 4 years out. The martian don't know squat about how heavy this thing will end up.
This car will end up at least as heavy as the Mustang GT. Which would be heavier than a 4th gen.
Consider. GM thinks at this point and time they're going to take a Sigma chassis, currently used to make a 3850lbs CTS-V, and mod it to make a Camaro. Which means replacing all the lightweight aluminum suspension pieces with stamped steel.
And in the end, a 3500-3600lb Camaro is A-OK with me. 400+ HP 6.0 for around $30K. That's a 12 sec car. Sign me up.
Sorry about you auto-Xers, but you'll have to strip down the car yourself.

Why? IRS and a body structure that's engineered to handle a godawful amount of power. Hint: what's the most horsepower that GM currently has in a production vehicle.
