Why? IRS and a body structure that's engineered to handle a godawful amount of power. Hint: what's the most horsepower that GM currently has in a production vehicle.

What's pathetic about it is, the fourth gen was heavy enough as-is(too heavy, actually, but styling made up for it), and hearing the fifth is going to be even heavier/bigger, pretty much kills it for me. Not to mention the fact that the designs the insiders have said are pretty close to the end product, are hideous to me.
Don't worry, I know GM just wants to make a car that will not fail, but I don't see how they can think that completely copycatting Ford is going to make them a success. Yeah, I believe it will be a better car, but it's still pathetic GM is that desperate.

Heavier car, with an LS2 (IRS) that dynos only 10-30rwhp or so more than a lighter stock LS1 car.... I really hope they tweak the LS2 for more power by the time the car comes out.

And again, it is worth mentioning that you have not seen this car, that you have not driven this car, that you have no idea what it will really weigh, have no idea what engines it will have or how it will handle. You know basically that there is a project going on a GM that, given proper circumstances, should enter the market as a Camaro sometime within the next five years. If you don't want this car based upon what you know, then you basically do not want any car due to come out in the next several years.

Why are so many people panicking? All we have here are a few vague clues. We don't know how much it is going to weigh, just that it might be more than a 4th gen. We don't know how much power it is going to have. It could be little more than the ls1, but it could be a hell of alot more. We don't know what it is going to look like, just that it will kinda look like a 1st gen.
Wait until you have the facts before you decide you don't like it.
From what we've heard from the 'insiders' on this thread, I'm damn excited, I think we possibly are going to have one of the most exciting cars we've ever seen.

Weather you or I or Scott would rather it weigh less, PRICE, content, and style are what matter to most consumers.

BTW....who's panicking? Who needs to calm down? It's an internet message forum, and the current topic of discussion has LOTS of unknown. Speculation, opinions, etc are to be expected. Even the not-so-flattering ones.

OK, forget the weight issue and lets go back to the beginning...
Basically we are getting the best Camaro ever built with power to back it up... Sounds like a great deal to me... Where do I sign???

Re: Reality check on the 5th gen reality check.....
Too many conflicting ideas. We are giving size and weight to a car that wont be in production for at least 18 months. In all reality, its a concept, and we will see nothing more.
The Mustang concept looked heavier to me then the production one, IMO anyway, and that was a 2 seater concept to a 4 seater production car.
What I cant stop thinking about is the Aston DB9 that was posted a few months ago. Thats very heavy looking, long wheel base, as well it fits the Camaro Formula.

one thing to keep in mind......
weight....(or lack thereof) can hamper or improve performance and fuel economy....both are very dear to GM.
That said, there's always an economic balance. You can use lots of carbon fiber and titanium......but that adds cost.
Rest assured that we understand the importance of a weight loss program.
(boy could I use one myself these days!)
