The original purpose of the Z28 has homologation for Trans Am racing. These cars were defined as four passenger "sedans" with a wheelbase of 116". http://www.amx-perience.com/TransAmRacing1968.htm

Actually the 1st gen Camaros had a 108" wheel base.

I believe the 3rd gen has a 101" or so wheelbase, as does the 4th gen

Clarification, the Trans Am race cars had to have a maximum of 116" wheelbase.

Re: Reality check on the 5th gen reality check.....

It also had a maximum engine displacement of 5.0 L (305 cid) which is why the Z28 originally had a 283 until Vince Piggins got the idea of sticking a hardened 283 crank in a 327 block to get 302.5 cid.

The point being... 1st and 2nd gens had a 108" wheelbase. The 3rd and 4th gens had 101" wheelbase. We're now changing directions 180 degrees.

Fair enough, I'll compromise.

*deep breath - can't believe I'm going to say it*

I'm probably willing to live with front struts IF THEY'RE DONE RIGHT and do not resemble the 3rd gen modified strut arrangment.

gag

ack

There. I compromised.

The car still can't be 3600lbs for me though.

I've only read as far as page 2 in this thread, but had to give a big to this post...they will be beat up for it, and its too bad that a copycat theme is as imaginative as GM could get. Again, I hope Charlie is wrong...but I know he's not.

Lets up that retro thing isn't as blatant as the Mustang. Otherwise...ewww...

One thing I will add though...if it looks good, it looks good. I love the HHR, and there is no question its retro, in a hot rod sorta way. So not all retro is evil...but the Mustang's retro is, at least to me.

I just don't want a rip off of an old design, and then have Chevy get flamed by the media and the public if/when they do what Ford did 3 years prior. Its bad enough I can't get a MODERN looking, new-age design. If its too retro, that will kill the car IMO.

How do we know??Also, if too modern, too new age, it risks losing ties to the Badge for which it was created...I think they have a firm grasp of how to incorporate "CUES" without copying a '69 Z by now...I mean, d@mn, this isn't their first project....
BTW, If it can run the numbers, better than a 4th gen, does the weight issue really matter???(slalom included)
I know the GTO does really well, for the "PORKER" some make it out to be....

i don't think we have to much too worry about YET. if RP and Guy aren't yankin our chains, the 5th gen should be able to be just as much "go" as "show". i'm still holding all praise and/or b****ing til i at least see the concept.

Friends...............

as you fret over this (and by the way.....I'm truly glad that there still is huge passion for these cars.........) ... (but please.....some of you.......you're killing me with your jumping to conclusions....).........I'd like you to keep one thing in mind........and toy with this in your mind for a while.......

Would you want to 'repaint' the Mona Lisa?

Great design can show many generations in one car....and still be a knock-out. Wouldn't it be grand if the design had flavors of all four generations in it????

(confidential to Drew........nope ...never designed one! That's GM Design's job........but don't believe everything you hear........not that I'm saying you do......)
