Will a 454c.i. BBC fit in a 4th gen F-body?

I havent really decided on an engine and have a few choices, a 500hp Lt1, or a 500hp Rat motor. Seeing as they'll both cost about the same I might go with the big block if it is worth it and there won't be any major problems to get it to fit. As far as clearance will there be any major problems I may face? Does anybody make an engine mount for a big block to fit in an F-body or will I have to fab some?

Thanks- Jerry

yes it will fit, a BBC is only 2.25 inches longer than a SBC. you will need a cowl hood, or really small breather.

Just curious. What about clearance for, and servicing, the distributor?

I hope you can fab and weld comfortably.

It isn't rocket science, but there are no "kits" to get the job done and a lot of stuff needs to be made and figured out on your own. I have read two or three build threads on BBC fourth gens and it was enough to change my mind about the swap

its getting easier but still requires work
use a BMR k-member w/o mounts and usemotor plates
buy some lemon headers, that'll take the two biggest problems out of the way.

you have to cut the radiator support and stand the radiator vertical

servicing the distributor you can either cut out the cowl, or you wouldhave to drop the engine, or run something like megasquirt

I'll do it if there are no accessory brackets to fab and I can use the ones out of a 86'-94 454 truck. Please say I can do it without messing with the radiator position, headers clearing okay with a BBC tubular k-member, and distributor is going to be a digitally programmable MSD E-curve that can be tuned in engine!. Big-Block= MONSTER torque/horsepower band!

Thanks- Jerry

you cannot do it w/o doing the radiator vertical

as far as the accessory bracket, i have no clue. all the ones I have seen are alternator only.

I will probably doing that next after I beat up this LT1 I just put together. I've always wanted to put a big block in a 4th Gen as well. I don't think you'll have a whole of problems, just depends on your skill to do some fabricating or getting someone to do some fabricating for you.

I've seen 4th Gens with big blocks, including a 512ci version. But I have no idea what is involved.

No surprise that a 15 year old link is broken.

There are other big block threads here, and some on lt1tech.com. Nobody here any more. Can go several days without a post, except for the SPAM for a fake dating site. The few people that are left drop in once in a while, but mostly LT1 fans.
