Thinking About An LT1 vs LS1 Shootout For GMHTP
I spoke with Rick Jensen last week and he indicated he was still planning on doing the shootout, but had not yet finalized a date or participants. Obviously, there is currently a state of transition at the magazine, but information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
Oh boy, both Mike AND Lambert are interested in this.
You know, the more it's pushed off, the faster I'll get. lol
It'd be nice if all three of us went/got in. Representin central/southern Illinois baby!!

Monday June 9th @ E-town
First, let me apologize to everyone for the amount of time that has passed without any new information on this shootout. For those of you that don't know, Johnny Hunkins was recently promoted to editor of Popular Hotrodding, with Rick Jensen moving up to assume the helm of GMHTP. That process has been quite hectic, especially since we're in the middle of the busiest point of our production year because of the seventh issue. We sincerely appreciate everyone's patience.
As it stands right now, we only have 17 applicants, almost all of whom are LS1s. There is a concern that some of the letters we received may have been misplaced during the editorial transition and we apologize if this is the case. The letters we have received so far are from:
Matt Spidell, 99 SS
William Maloney, 99 Vette
Rich Andrews, 99 Z
Tony Pezzino, 96 SS
Rich Krause, 95 Z
Lambert Fleck, 00 Hawk
Pete Donato, 02 WS6
Trevor Doelling, 02 SS
Travis Linville, LT1 Z
Ted Hunter, 94 Z
Steve Brough, 94 Formula
Dennis Kazimir, LS1 Vette
Edgar Perez, 99 Vette
Ellis Gray, 00 Vette
Rob Franta, 01 WS6
Tim LeGros, 00 T/A
Priscilla Trevino, 00 Formula
If you sent us a letter and you're not on that list, we either have not received it or may have misplaced it. Because of this situation and the apparent lack of interest on the part of LT1 owners, Rick has decided to accept applicantions via e-mail through Wednesday, April 9th. These e-mail applications must include all the information previously requested (basic car info, list of mods, best ET, etc.. and a good, quality picture). Please direct your e-mail applications to rick.jensen@primedia.com only. Do not send them to me, do not post them in this thread.
Rick has asked me to remind everyone that your car must be NHRA-legal for your speed/ET and you must pass E-town's noise requirements. He also said those cars not chosen for this shootout will be kept on file for future shootouts.
The date for the shootout will be Monday, June 9th, with a raindate of Tuesday, June 10th. This will be an all-day event and it is imperative that all participants arrive on time. I believe we started around 8 or 9 am last year. We also need to make sure everyone who is selected can participate on both days in the event that rain forces us to Tuesday.
Again, thank you all for your interest and patience and don't hesitate to ask any questions not already addressed in this post or this thread.

Jim,
thanks for the update, I can't believe I hadn't heard about this event! Where have I been for the last 5 months, lmao!!!!
Well I sent in my email application with 2 links, good pics and one click away from my 10.14 run. I will gladly stand firm with the LT1 tribunal, and a spanking of the LS1's we will go
Let the grudge matches begin, I will challenge any LS1 6 speed, at least for braggin rights
regardless of who is chosen to participate this will help to make another excellent piece of reading material!
I have a question, sorry it is late and I am tired... how many LT1 and LS1 participants? And approximately when will the decision be made and posted?(is it safe to assume shortly after the deadline)
Taner (is it spring yet, just 21 days till the track opens...woohoo!)

taner, ideally we would like to select an equal number of LT1s and LS1s, but if there isn't enough interest on the part of LT1 owners we'll have to get creative. For the sake of logistics both at the track and in the magazine, we'll probably look for a field of around 12 cars. Invitations would be extended shortly after the deadline, as we anticipate some folks will have to back out for various reasons and we'll need to find substitutes.

Jim, I would be interested in joining the shootout, but the only concern I have is the noise restriction. In reading about the LT1 bolt on shootout for GMHTP, alot of those participants seemed to be right on the line with noise. Even with my Borla closed off, I highly doubt that the car will be quieter than the 95dB rule.
I have a 93 Formula M6 with a solid roller 396.
Let me know
THanks, Jason

I was right at the border line through a factory cat back so its going to be lots of work to get that noise down.. But i'm definetly intersted to see how they do it..
.. About the rear exit exhausts.. What about the guys who have true duals that exit prior to the axle?? they are excluded?
