Why would you remove the timing cover to replace the seals, especially if the engine is in the car?

Well the guy said that if his timing cover gasket was leaking in addition to the front seal.... how else would he replace them? Plus most people have enough trouble installing the front seal while the cover is off let alone on the car with the crank snout in the way.

You don't have to remove the front cover to get the seal out. You can get the seal out with a puller, or even a screwdriver by just pulling the damper.

Re: Debris found in the oil pan.

Old post I know... But I had the same & wanted an opinion. I just installed a new seal & although I haven't looked yet, I concluded the same that I must have messed up the seal when I put the seal in. So... in my case only about 1/2 of the spring has been recovered so far. I intend to fill/drain again to try to get the remainder but what if I cannot get it that way? Will that little spring go anywhere other than the magnetic drain plug?

Thanks,
Todd

Re: Debris found in the oil pan.

Ok, well in case anyone has any ideas... it wasn't the front crank seal. And I compared the diameter of the spring found in the pan to the spring for the front crank seal. The spring found is a smaller diameter even then the one in the crank seal. I cannot think of what seal would have a smaller diameter spring (same type) and could be found in the oil pan. I thought maybe the old opti seal because it was missing, but checked a new seal and it is also without a spring.

Guess at this point I'll see if/where it leaks. Not sure what else to look at right now. Any thoughts appreciated...

I think the seal for the water pump drive has a tiny spring.

The valve springs also have little springs on them...never seen one just fail though, had to of been damaged on installation first.
