What happened to the Ste. Therese story

If a new-car looks like a Camaro, but is called something else, it won't be the same IMO.
If it comes down to that, I might as well buy a Corvette, or worse... a MUSTANG!

A Camaro-type car from Chevrolet ,that is not called Camaro...will have lost it's luster for me. I'd be much happier buying a Mustang at that point. And.......I am serious as a heart attack on that.
I don't know what GM has to do to extricate itself from that shortsighted.....and quite frankly, really pretty stupid agreement....but they'd better get it done.....and soon.
I've got cash in hand and I'm waiting for a Camaro....let me spell that for you:

Chevelle is a fine name. I don't care if it's put on a smallish coupe instead of a two door intermediate.
Maybe Laguna S3?
Corvette4 (for 4 seater)?
Cutlass (the name is now available!)?
Monza?
II?
Or the universe of unused real and made up words?

Product Quality means much more than name IMO. People don't buy Grand Prix's today because of what they were in the 60's. Take the Thunderbird name for instance....it has been on a roadster, personal luxury coupe, sedan, and even a wago. My point is forgetting the retro bird we have now...I don't think many people bought say a 88 Turbo Coupe on the basis of what the T-bird name was in the 50, 60's, or 70's...they bought it because it was a cool car in 1988.
I am sure if Chevy came out with a sporty coupe smaller than the GTO, with a V8, RWD, and dead on chevy styling cues...but gave it a new name it would still sell. I doubt it will get a new name....just saying that if the car is right, it should be desirable enough that the name won't matter.

Just look at all the whining about the GTO -- if they'd called it the Grand Prix coupe, maybe the legions of GTO fans living in the late 60s and early 70s wouldn't have been so agitated (surely a fan of the 1964 GTO wouldn't complain about plain styling :-)
The name is important, but life will go on whatever it's called. Just give me a nice, compact, V8 coupe (actually, I'd rather have 4 doors) with a 6 liter V8.
"You can call me anything you want; just don't call me late for dinner!"
Other than the $55000 price, what do folks think of the new Mercedes C55? I'd love to see something close to that size with an LS2 from GM. Skip the various luxury items that bump up the cost so much, and make you worry about where you can park it, etc. A coupe would be nice too. I guess I need two cars.

Also, keep in mind Bob Lutz has a liking for changing the names of vehicles redone on his watch. I'm not hinting that's what he's considering. But GM isn't going to ruffle feathers if they don't have to.
Hopefully, they won't.

GM pissed off a lot of people when they killed the Camaro. I personaly would consider it a slap in the face if they were to build a "Camaro" and not name it Camaro.
I don't know, it just doesn't seem like a good idea to slap pissed off people and then try to sell them products in the future.

What if Ford were to suddenly change the name of the Mustang?Or what if Chevy deceided to change the name of the Corvette? They would probably be the laughing stocks of the automotive industry.
Here's another example. what if Coke or Pepsi decided to change their name. Sure, they would probably still sell product to people that like the taste, but does anyone honestly think their sales would be as good or better than they were before. Not on your life!
Ever heard of New Coke?

Chevrolet already has a small coupe that was created for today's tuner crowd, its called Cobalt SS. They even have a standard version for the masses that prefer fuel economy, comfort and quality.

Maybe there are some crazies out there who would buy or not buy a V8 RWD coupe based solely on what name it has. Who would buy a Mustang instead of a C8, just to punish the corporation selling the C8 because the name is not Camaro.
Whatever.
I'm sure GM will do what it can to keep the Camaro name. But if the cost goes into nine digits, you may yet get the chance to punish GM for not saddling each car with a $500 surcharge just to keep the name.
For me, I'll take the $500 and my nice, new C8!

If those were our desires we would never consider buying a Camaro.
If Ford were to rename the Mustang, or Chevy the Corvette, there would be a huge uprising of unhappy fans. I'm sorry but anyone that says, "I don't care what Chevrolet calls their V8 RWD sports coupe just as long as they build one" is not a true Camaro fan, and quite frankly doesn't deserve an opinion on the matter. They can go buy a Mustang, GTO, Charger or whatever. However I don't want them messing up the equation for the rest of us who will only settle on the return of the Camaro in name and character.

But New Coke was completely the opposite case. The name remained the same, but the taste changed. Complaints about New Coke were directed at the taste, not the name.

It doesn't change the point. When the name of a product reaches icon like status it can become as important or even more important than the product itself. You didn't comment on the other name changes? You really don't think that if Mustang, Corvette, Coke, or Pepsi were to suddenly change their name, that sales would not be hurt by that? Come On.
As far as being crazy or trying to punish GM that isn't it at all.
Here's the deal. I am not a banner waving Chevy guy. I do not have bow-tie stickers on my cars and I don't have "little boy pissing on Ford" stickers on my truck. I am however a Camaro and Firebird Fanatic and have been since my primary transportation was a bicycle with tranning wheels. I have owned mulitiple versions of F-cars through the years as well as numerous other GM vehicles. (Sorry for the life story). The point is, the name Camaro pulls more weight with me than Chevy. I am not going to buy something that I don't want just because they make it.
I DO NOT WANT A NOMAD, CHEVELLE, BEL AIR, OR EL-CAMINO, ETC. I WANT A CAMARO. I WANT IT TO BE A CAMARO, AND I WANT IT TO BE NAMED CAMARO.
I will accept no substitutions, and I don't feel I should have to.
I consider the Death of the Camaro to be a huge mistake. I know there were reasons for it, but there is no excuse for it. The sequence of events that lead to it should have never happened. In my eyes, the only possible hope that GM has to rectify this situation with their customers is to bring it back asap, better than ever, name included. Anything else is unacceptable. This whole thing will be a thorn in GM's side until that happens.
For me, its less about revenge and more about loss-of-faith. I will have lost faith in GMs ability to understand what customers like me really want. At that point, I will give up, agree to disagree and move on. Its that simple.
If it is not called CAMARO, I won't buy it. Read that GM plain and simple. I like the quote about going with BMW's. I am getting too old to keep waiting around for you to get your act together. These cars are all I have driven from Day 1, and I even bought a new one a couple of years ago... Just because I knew all this BS was coming. You got til 07 to get it together (THE NEW CAMARO), or there are alot of us that are gone for good. I don't care how we got where we got or how we get out of it, just fix it if you want anymore of my thousands and thousands of dollars!
2007.... CAMARO....Plain and simple.
2007.... CAMARO....Plain and simple.
Look, all the hystrionics going on here don't help anything.
If I remember the poll right, Camaro was the third most recognized vehicle name in the industry behind Corvette and Mustang.
GM knows that.
I'll tell ya another thing though...
Most of the folks screaming about not buying it if it doesn't have the name are going to be the same folks screaming about it not being a Camaro if it doesn't match THEIR perception of what the car is 100%.
It's the same crap C6 is going through now. GM builds a vastly better car than the previous generation and a VERY SMALL group of folks start whining about the damned steering wheel.
Let me cover that again...
GM replaces the current car with a better-performing, basically identical price, nicer interior, all-around better car and a bunch of hysterical women b!tch about the F*CK*NG STEERING WHEEL.
GM could put a ghetto-style chromed and welded chain in the car for a steering wheel and I couldn't give a **** less about it - the thing will run neck and neck with a Viper on a road course for a little over half the price...
Jesus H. Christ.
Send the emails in, let them know you care about the name and would sure like the thing to be called a Camaro.

lol!
Tell 'em how you really feel there Danno......LOL!
I agree w/ you....half the people will HATE ANY new 5th gen because it ain't....(pick your personal favorite model here)......no matter what GM does.
To say you wouldn't buy a car that has the Camaro's DNA because GM cut it's losses and brought the car back early, is pretty damned silly.
Now I love the Camaro just as much, if not more than most, but we sure as hell don't need a major pissin' match when it does come back. Sometimes it's best to just move on.
GM would love nothing better than to use the Camaro name.....but how long to wait and how much do you have to give up to be able to?
If GM said, we can give you a car with the Camaro's DNA by 2006, but it would be called something else....and we would stop letting Ford have the market to themselves....OR we can wait until 2007 or 2008 and give you the same car, called Camaro...but we are going to loose 100k++ in sales.......which would you choose?
The movement here to to "try" and do both....get the Camaro name on a car ASAP by encouraging GM to stand strong......
