You should be able to get into the 13's with 300hp in a 3rd Gen. depending on gear, drive train, and your abilities. As an example, my nearly stock 97 convert. M6, with a 3:73 gear, runs 14.0XXs. in the quarter and dyno's at 250rwhp. But weighs 3816lb. And these are not est., I have the dyno sheet and time slips to prove them.

And no one ever said that you can't get 300hp out of a 305. You need to go back and reread from the beginning. This started with 85_305 inferring that he was getting an est. 300hp with just basic bolt-on's. At which point a few of us raised the BS flag and it's gone down hill from there.

Cliffnotes? Hmm... 85_305 makes a post (doesn't matter what was said), 8230847200 angry people respond saying he's wrong, right or retarded. Thread dies down for a bit. Matt posts again, all hell breaks loose... and finally we all agree to disagree. I think that more or less summarizes it. :P

Re: lg4

ok yall are pretty stupid, his estimate of 300hp could very well be considerably low.

305s have been built to over 400hp with nothing more than bolt ons and sme minor head work that could be done for under $300 at even the highest charging of machine shops. Oh and you need the old 327350 cam to go to about 350hp and still have some tire melting torque, or this 224 comp cam with the 501" lift, to go all the way. Just dont forget to put in clevitte bearings all around, or atleast the hi-techs, or you'll spin one pretty quick.

So let's cut to it

L69 9.5:1 short block the only difference between an LG4 and an L69 is the compression, stock w/ .039 head gaskets this is 8.5-1 on an LG4 to hit 9.5-1 simply get some .015 head gaskets for i think it's $30 at advance autoparts....partsamerica.com

Comp Cam 224 deg.@.050", .501" net lift, 110 deg. lobe separation. mild

RHS 041 heads, 59.0 cc, 1.94/1.50, mild porting, polished chambers and exhaust ports, Manley Pro Flo valves,
open up the LG4 heads to 1.94 on the intake, at the machine shop, get a home porting kit, this is done for a max of oh, $350, iff (yes iff ->if and only if) you go with the swirly SS valves, you need a guy to do it? look one up in your phone book, i bought a set of corvette heads redone for $400 from my usual machinist,

Crane roller rockers bolt on

Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, minor-work in plenum area, port matched bolt on

650-cfm Holley double-pumper bolt on

Hooker 1 3/4" primary tube headers bolt on

MSD Extra Duty distributor, Blaster 2 coil bolt on

Engine Dyno numbers:

RPM Horsepower Torque
3500 210 314
4000 243 319
5000 270 320
5500 316 331
6000 361 344
6500 378 305
6850 386 296
7250 402 287

You people need to do your research before you go bashing people, an old 305 can whoop an LS1 in power for a lot less money, this build right here, oh $700 maybe with buying the old LG4 for $150. buy an LS1 and hit 400bhp for under $3000 much less $700

Now this is a forum for helping people with their problems, why bash someone? it's pointless, any motor can do damn near anything, who do you think you are to have to bash someone else?....Unless you payed a couple grand for an old 2.5L iron duke in a third gen... then i feel your pain.

I have a 72 355 with 487x corvette heads, a weiand xcelerator intake, mallory ignition, holley 750, headers, flattops, the hole 9 yards, i also have a 305 in my garage that's receiving a build similar to the one outlined in this post, just to do it, and when i do I'm going to simply race the thing and see what happens. I expect it to outperform my 355, and that's fine with me. my 355 barks louder

Re: lg4

I like how you conveniently forgot to tell us the name of the magazine article, which was "Deadly Lessons". They called it that because the 305 blew up on the dyno only seconds after they obtained those figures.

hahaha!! thats what you get for spinning a 305 that high with such 'cheap' bolt-ons.

and if it was SO easy to build high horsepower..and cheaper than ls1's, why isnt EVERYONE running them?
