2.73 gears OK with a LG4 motor?

My first post! I have an '85 Berlinetta, LG4 engine, 3.08 open rear, all stock. I was able to pick up a complete posi drum axle for $120. But, I didn't know what gears were in it till I got it home. The doner car listed a GU2 gear code = 2.73. My question is how will these gears work in my car? The car won't see the strip, is used mainly by my wife to commute, but I have been wanting a little lower gear to "get off the line" quicker. My concern comes because I don't see 2.73 gears listed as coming with a LG4! Does anybody know why not? Thanks.

the 2.73 will make the car slower. on the bright side the motor will turn less rpms. use a little less gas on long drives. "lower" gears refer to higher ratio like 3.73, 4.10, etc

A daily driver for the Wife, that rear should be no problem for you with the engine now in the car. It was No performance car to start with.

Thanks for the relpies! I guess I didn't really state what was bothering me. The donor car was an '88 IROC, 350 TPI. All the 350 TPI auto cars came with that gear. I'm guessing because they had the low end torque to use that gear. Will my 'gutless wonder' LG4 really dog down if I use them?

no. the 350 TPI cars usually came with 3.23, 3.42 (10 bolt) or 3.27(9 bolt). the carb and TBI cars usually came with the 2.73 gears.

MRR23, my mistake. I see that it's the 305 cars with the 2.73's. I'm looking at the RPO list for the car again, and I see it was an LB9(mental note...don't let the wife copy down the RPO's!!). Thanks.

2.73:1 in an LG4 should be against the law. Get some 3.42s or 3.73s. But if the wife doesn't really care, then why bother.
