Engine Swap Thread. V6 to...?

Re: Engine Swap Thread. V6 to...?
Hi everyone,
Ok, I've basically read every post here and it's been all a great help.
I own a 1999 3.8L v6 5 speed Camaro. The engine was just blown the other day, so I need to replace it. I'm waiting till spring to do so, so I'm looking at the options.
From what I've gathered, in order to do an LT1 or LS1 swap, I'd need to swap transmissions as well. I'd rather not do that. What about a small block 350 engine? Can I then use the same tranny and what may be some other requirements to do the swap.
As a last option, a bigger v6 might have to do, such as a 4.3L. Can the same tranny be used with this and what may be some other requirements?

Re: Engine Swap Thread. V6 to...?
I have a question, a little different situation than other people in this thread.
I own a 1996 camaro that was originally a 3.8 M5, but the motor spun a bearing and was replaced with a 3.8 out of a 1998 camaro, RS i believe. Since the motor is out of a 1998 camaro, would that make it easier to swap an LS1 into it? I originally thought it would be easier to swap an LT1 since its a 1996 camaro, but i wasnt even thinking that the motor is out of a 1998. So will the LS1 match up better?

350tpi into 95 firebird w/3.8
How hard would it be to swap in a tpi motor into a 95 firebird. My 91 camaro was in a wreck and I was going to put the 350 into a firebird I can get for $400. I'll be using the 700r4 and wiring out of the camaro to go into the 'bird but what else would I need to change?

I just finished a LS1 swap into my 94 v6 car.
Simply put it was straight forward.
Things that most people claim you have to have and I didn't do:
gauge cluster
shocks/springs
radiator and fans
thats right Im running the 94 v6 stuff and it all works fine.
VATS should not be affected. Your orignaal vats will remain, you can delete it if you want to before or after, but you don't HAVE to do anything to it.
wiring schematics can be found all over the net for both the 94 and the ls1 car. I recommend using a 98 computer/harness because its more similar to the earlier year cars. LS1 tech has a excellent FAQ for ls1 side.
www.shbox.com has excellent wiring diagrams for the older cars. The V8 schematics are 99.9% the same as the v6s.
I cut the connectors off the original v6 harness, labeled the wires, labeled the wires on the v8 side, cut its connectors off, then spliced the v6 connectors into the ls1 harness, going by the labels. Straight forward. Plugs right back in like it was stock.
everything works, car runs like a raped ape. Happy with the swap.

Great news Tiago ! Congrats
I'll start the swap myself as soon as i get back from Afghanistan.
Did you make pics ?
Thanks for sharing and props to that Turbo setup on the 3.4 you made years ago, it was good to see somebody who actually did something totally different.

Just to let all of you guys thinking about doing a lt1 swap know, BUY A DONOR CAR!!!! I bought a lt1 and trans out of a 94 vette w/ intentions of putting into my 95 camaro. If you go this route, plan on spending some extra money on converting all of the vette stuff to camaro spec and the vette 4l60e will not work- you need an f-body lt1 4l60e for the swap. The vette trans case is different and the output shaft and tailhousing is shorter than f-body. Also, I've been spending ridiculous amounts of cash piecing everything together. So far I have purchased lt pacesetters, magnaflow catback, f-body water pump, f-body accesory bracket, alternator, alternator bracket, ps pump and resevoir, all ps lines, lt1 radiator, z28 fuel rails, fuel lines, 150 mph gauges, lt1 dual fans, f-body oil pan, new ignition coil and icm, 94z pcm and wiring harness, ac lines, k-member, motor mounts, trans crossmember and mount and much much more- I think you all get the point. I also had to buy another trans (f-body spec) because that vette one wouldn't work (this vette trans is for sale if anyone is interested). Anyhow, I'm waiting on v8 springs, fuel pump, new opti, plugs and wires, crank pulley/ballancer, front sway bar, etc., etc. Some of you may say "why go through with it"? Well, I was young and stupid I suppose, and spent mega money on appearance mods to get the car where I wanted it, appearance wise- custom paint, interior, body mods and so on. I figured I could live with the 3.4l. However, I'm tired of drawing so much attention because my car looks fast. I'm constantly getting dogged by people who pull up next to me at lights or at car shows and are like "sweet" and then ask me to pop the hood. I'm like, nothing to see fellas- v6 baby. So the time has come to do something about it, regardless of the cost. If I were to start over with a new z, I would easily spend as much on appearance mods to get it where my current v6 is so I decided to do the swap. If anyone has question on an lt1 swap, I've been doing alot of homework so feel free to shoot me a p.m. and on another note, I've bought most of my parts from fellow forum members who have been more than helpful. Thanks to all who have helped me get this far.
It may be a bit before my swap is done, as I work full time and am currently a full time student, but I'll definetly post in this thread again when it has been completed. Hope you guys enjoyed the novel I just wrote. LOL
