V-6 to Hottness :)

OK real quick let me appoligize if this message will be a repeat from others. I'm new here and FYI i know nothing about swapping engines let alone engine work period. So please please be patient with me.

I own a all Black 96 RS Camaro 3.8 V6

I've decided since I have overheating problems that instead of working on that engine that I'd rather just swap out the engine. Of course I want to go with what will fit in my car. V-8 especially.

Can I get some advice on the different types of engines that can go in this car and some price ranges along with what all needs to be done for this job.

One thing to keep in mind. I'm not rich or anything like that so I will need time to do this job and save money. Especially with the new camaro coming out.

I look forward to all the responses if I get any.

Thanks
Boyd

If there is anyone interested I swapped a 350 carbed engine into a 95 3.4lv6 camaro. I might be able to help you out if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Bolt patterns are entirely different and even if they weren't the LS1 would crush that 5 Speed like a torch to paper within the first week of driving it.

I have a 2002 Pontiac Firebird and I am definately going to be doing a motor swap to it. I am currently either going to do an LS1 or an LQ9 swap but here's my questions...

1. There's some people who WERE able to reuse their 3.8L 4L60E A4 transmission for the swap. That could save me ALOT of money if I could do the same. How can I find out if I can or cannot? I know that the bellhousings were different for some people yet for others somehow it bolted right up, no modifications required. I want to know how can I see if mine will bolt right up? If it DOESN'T bolt right up, is there any kind of modification I can do to bolt it up?

2. I have a Posi Rearend with 3.42's (Y87)... About how much HP can this rear handle?

3. I want to keep my stock 125 MPH speedometer, I don't want the 155 MPH speedometer. How can I configure my wiring harness to appropiately accept this?

4. For the LQ9 swap, will the 4L80E A4 work in a 02 Firebird? Are these motors reverse cooled just like the LS1? Will I need to change the accessory belt? and finally, how would I configure my wiring harness to accept this motor (would I need an LS1 wiring harness or could I use the LQ9 harness?)

Re: Engine Swap Thread. V6 to...?

My son and I are building up an "old school" 301 cu in. These were over-bored 283's capable of 8000 streetable Rpms. Our actual motor is destroked 327's at what Chevy calls 302. We are planning to remove the V6 in my 2002 coupe and drop in this high reving motor.

Since we are NOT going to drag race this engine and since the power band does not come on strong until 3500 Rpms, we will keep all the stock drive line components.

We have already upgraded the suspension to SS specs on the coupe. We also plan to upgrade the clutch system abd retain the original 5-speed.

The only issue is what to do with the computer?? Swapping the engine, we feel, will be easier than dealing with all the computer inputs we may have to modify.

Anyway, that is our plan.......

Honestly, unless you're going with some Gen I SBC items, you'd be much better off selling your LT1 engine AND your 3.8 engine and purchasing a LS1, 5.3L LM7 or 6.0L LQ4... You're going to do twice as much work and half of your car will not even work and you will still be 75 HP shy of an LS1.

Re: Engine Swap Thread. V6 to...?

I have a 95*3.4l*Camaro i removed the v6 and installed the 94 lt1 ive done the whole swap and ive got the car running now but it is dumping to much gas at idle and im getting crazy readings from my pcm.....i originally did the swap about a year ago and i screwed up the wiring under the hood could somebody that has done this swap send me the information needed to match up my 95*3.4l*forward lamp harness to match up with my 94lt1 engine harness and pcm i may have a 94*3.4l*harness because it does not have a c105 connector on the right shock tower so i guess i need to go back through the wiring could somebody help me out i would appreciate it........also everything inside the car is correct all i had to do inside was run a pcm power supply behind the instrument cluster
