But if you're going to do all that work, go with the LS1. its lighter, faster and better. I thought about a swap, but in the end sold my v6 away.
I drove about 5 LT1's 2 stock, and 3 that were modded. one had a cam/ PP heads and boltons.
The Stock LS1's seemed faster and MUCH smoother. Plus the LS1 keeps building power past 6000k RPM and it is built well enough to take it.

just to let you know swaping an ls1 into a 97 will be mostly the same parts and an lt1 swap although the wiring will be a lot more difficult and probly require the dash to be rewired
