I asked Lloyd Elliot about this a couple months ago and he said he switched to PAC Beehives a while back. PAC was the previous manufacturer of the 918s. The problems with the 918 seem to have started after the change of suppliers.

Lloyd hooked me up with the PAC springs rather than the CC's. I actually recivied replacements from CC but I sent them back.

The PAC springs looked better on the tops and bottoms where they are machined flat. They were very smooth where the CC's looked rough and course.

I'd like to add my story to this thread.....

BATCH # 49253 produced this after 2000 miles with no track passes, no over-revs and NO high-rpm operation before operating temperature.

In addition to this, I also know that someone reported a failure from BATCH # 49045.

While I don't know everyone's batch number, THREE people, just that I know personally have reported failures, as well as SEVERAL more that I don't know.

Engine damage has varied based on whether or not someone was lucky enough to have the broken coil stay seated under the retainer so the valve couldn't drop. I myself was lucky enough to pull this spring out before it did any damage.

These were removed from a '98 LS1 belonging to a friend of mine after 1000 miles.

I don't have his batch number yet, but I will get it from him if he's got it and add it to this post.

And this would be a picture of one of my broken 918's (two broke), causing the valve to drop and destroy my piston, thus destroying my motor. This is on the setup listed in my sig.

Ordered July/August 06, not installed till January and ran till about 1500 miles and broke at 1600rpm going 20 miles an hour. Blah.

I am thinking this is a design flaw, not a manufacturing problem. Else why would all the breaking be right at the top coil?

you wouldn't happen to know your batch number would you? I'm actually compiling a list on some of the other forums. I can transfer it over here too if there's any interest.

Well some people are suggesting that the spring's inherent weakpoint is right where it flattens to form the retainer seat there, thus contaminated (ie: weakened) steel would be most likely to break there....

Me personally.....I haven't got a clue exactly why it's happening. I just know something has got to be wrong here.

springs

Too bad, we as aftermarket purchasers of parts are constantly being assured that the items we buy are the greatest, the best. Cams, then lifters and now springs. Marginal, at best equiptment,is being advertised here. We need a lot more! Meanwile we continue to support these vendors with our hard earned and hard to save dollars, only to find that there was a small batch of failures that lead to catastrophic failure of of our prised auto.
These vendors should be made to compensate us for our/THIER mistakes. Not just say, we will send you new springs! Another ripoff!!!

I always dress my springs top and bottom, but now I'm worried about them after reading all of this. I did measure all the springs and compress them on a press to look at the pressures - wonder if any of that helped. Sure seems like a defective part to me. Makes me want to pull my valve covers off tomorrow and just look at them... Little over 2k miles & quite a few high speed blasts - lift is 235/255 at the spring.
