Who has seen 918 beehive springs do this?

An update on this situation.
I contacted CC personally today and discussed this matter. I talked to two reps including the one that talked to my engine builder last week about the spring breakage.

The CC rep stated that the bad batch quote between those two guys was taken out of context and that it is not true. Again there is no known defective batch of 26918's according to CC.

I removed the original post after being assured that I had unintentionally posted incorrect information. I should have just made the initial phone call to CC myself and then this firestorm may have been avoided. I am posting this note to calm the fears of those that started to worry about their own springs. Like Brett said if this were a widespread thing then more people would be posting regarding the problem.

There was clearly a problem with my 26918 springs. He stated that my situation was an isolated incident and the springs are in the process of being replaced.

Thanks for correcting the information. Glad to hear that.

I bet CC, Lloyd, and Bret got a lot of phone calls and PM's. I made one myself.

Lloyd has been contacted and been informed of my entire conversation with CC.

I've actually been pretty impressed with Comp over the years... In general, they're pretty good about handling these situations, I can't remember ever hearing about them being anything but helpful when a defective product gets out. A lot of manufacturers will try to keep a bad batch quiet and see how many people attribute the failure to something else. Comp doesn't really do that. Anyway, glad to hear you got it sorted out, good luck with the new springs.

Actually they are not doing that here. I talked with them and no other failures have happened that they know of. I'm going to get the springs back and then send them in and have them inspected.

Certainly good news. I was about to check a bit further into this myself by e-mailing AI. Thanks for the update!

I had a broken valve spring with my AI heads (918s) after 60 miles of use. It broke in a different spot then yours though. AI was extremely helpful with everything. I pulled both heads, sent it to them and they checked all the springs and replaced the spring that broke along with the valve. 6k miles later and it's running mint still.

They haven't heard of any other failures, yet from another engine builder:

Bad News

I had a broken 26918 on piston #6. There was some noise from pass side valve cover.

Opened the valve cover to check and found spring snapped in the middle. Saw the broken spring but the valve stayed in place.

Now should I replace all springs or just the broken one?

I would figure out why you broke that one, but when did you buy the springs?

Bought them on 4/5/2006, from the invoice, as part of RPM KIT part# 54100.

Did the install around October 2006 but didn't start the engine till March 2007, so, springs didn't see alot of use. I had the engine at the ground, so, could that cause spring failure from being compressed for long time, 4-5 months?
