where to find +12v to fire mezier water pump
where to find +12v to fire mezier water pump
finishting up my 97 z28, and i need to get the mezier electric water pump wired up. i have a relay for it that will get +12v and ground, but i don't know where to siphon off a +12v hot for the relay trigger. it needs to be +12v when the ignition key is in the on/run (not start) position. since i am not using the egr solenoid and that pigtail is just kinda hanging around, anyone know if one of those wires is a steady +12v? (not sure where to look in electrical info to try and figure that out myself.) if not there, then i'm open to suggestions of where to tap/splice. someplace in the engine compartment on the driver's side would be nice...

Since a relay coil is a very low draw, I would usually suggest a Fuse Tap (at most auto-parts stores). Another possibility is a Fuse Blade Tap, which you could use in the relay panel, where a relay gets switched power. The Blade Tap provides a standard .25" male blade terminal, to fit with a .25" female terminal end on a wire. If you can find a place to tap, the Blade Tap can be bent as needed to give access to the power.

thanks, that's helpful, but i am looking for specific suggestions as to WHICH fuse or wire to tap. i guess i can just poke around with a voltmeter to try to find something suitable...

The brown wire to the EGR solenoid is +12v with key on. Powered by 15A fuse #2 underhood. Should be a possibility to run the relay coil (not the load).

Look at Shoebox’s 1996 ignition switch wiring diagram. All the components wired via ignition switch pin A on connector C1 - orange wire/circuit 300 - are hot in RUN (only). This would include fuses 1 and 2 (as mentioned above) in the under hood box, and fuses 2 and 6 (?? diagram is fuzzy) in the instrument panel.

If you wanted to be able to turn the pump on in the ACCY position as well as RUN (e.g. - cool down at the drag strip), consider fuse 14 in the instrument panel box. There is actually a small square opening (labeled ACCY) that allows you to insert a 1/4” male spade lug to connect and be protected by fuse 14. Obviously you would want a switch to allow you to turn the pump off in the ACCY position when necessary, and that would leave you at risk of forgetting to turn is back on when the engine is running. Add a small LED to remind you.
EDIT - looked at factory service manual to verify fuse #’s above

Re: where to find +12v to fire mezier water pump
The relay coil load is so small, it would not matter much about which fuse/relay you tap, as long as it is switched by the ignition key, Injuneer makes a good suggestion, above, for the dragstrip. For any added voltage wire, an inline fuse near the Tap is a very good idea.
