LT1/LT4 Stroker Builder Who's the Best
I have expressed doubt to the claims, but I never called anyone a liar. I asked a question, and I hope everyone else recognized the difference. You or he could show pictures of a hundred engines - what does that prove? Absolutely nothing.
Credibility and integrity are something everyone should demand when spending the money we do on our cars - you all should demand results of any prospective builder, regardless of the 'camp' you subscribe to.
You can certainly choose to live on planet naivete, but don't hate because I chose the one called accountability.

Mine aren't far off from being known, no qualms in sharing them when I have them.
As another guy who does motors for a living, I agree with 99% of what Bret says on this forum, and he sure spends a lot of time helping people out and giving away advice. From everything that I have seen, he does not try and obtain customers on this board, he specs cams & valvetrain kits that are used by Lloyd Elliot in his packages, who happens to be a site sponsor. Your demands for dyno charts and track times have been filled with all the happy customers that have used his cams through Lloyd and posted their results. And another point is that I don't really pay attention to who has the highest dyno number or the fastest track time, but I do know that I see complete satisfaction from those guys who run those packages who all comment about how drivable the vehicle is, it is that coupled with good power and flat torque that makes customers happy and brings them back.
This is why I do not do business on the internet, keep the customers local, keep them happy and I can avoid all this internet drama.

The question wasn't: has BRE ridden LEPW coattails to e-success and sold camshafts? it was: where are all these engines he's always talking about building?
If you critique everything and constantly talk down to everyone, what are your qualifications? I think its a fair question.

I get your point. But, c'mon, this could be a fun game. Exactly the opposite of playing 'what's wrong with this picture'. I think:
-Block has been shot-peened.
-Drainback chamfered and screened.
-Valley wall smoothed above drainback.
-Clearance for Morel lifter 'aligner' cut into top boss around lifter bore.
-Head clearanced for 3/8 pushrod.
-New steel oil pump driveshaft.
-Filler in low spots to reduce oil retention?
Anything else?

There is not need to clearance the block for the Morels. That's the plastic oil pump drive and the block wasn't shot peened it's just very well cleaned.
You can plug the drainbacks in the lifter valley with pipe plugs, stand pipes or epoxy, or if you cam tunnel the block screens. I just like the oil to drain back to the bottom end thru the front and back of the block to help reduce windage. Hell if you want some other things to try.... http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng...mc/index1.html
Do you need to do those things to have a good motor? No, not at all. Clearances and machine work are by far the two most important things, that's what good vendors who care about their name do very well. I do these things because thats the level I like to go to when I build a motor.
There are lots of theories on oil control.... you can have a wide open pan or a windage tray/pan that almost touches the crank. Scrapers, baffles, cut down profiled counterweights, cam tunnels etc.... are all part of different guys way of doing things.
And for what it's worth, I'm as much a student of engines as I am a teacher. The ONLY thing that knows what a motor wants IS THE MOTOR!! I do not claim to know it all or be able to solve every problem, but I do come at it a different way than most so I have a different view of it. I've been chastized for my "theory" view, but guess what most of the guys in the world in charge of trying new things in places where there is the money to do so are the same way. I know cause we seem to find each other and talk a lot.

I entered this thread of my own accord. I could have rolled my eyes and clicked on the next thread as I usually do when I see you guys ranting on Bret for no reason. Had I done that would the 355 in my car no longer exist? You would think so. And I'm the naive one?

P.S. "but don't hate...." Non-LT1 related question: Does anybody older than 16 actually speak like that?
I guess I'm missing why you feel he needs to be held accountable to you. Did you pay him for a product he failed to deliver? If not, why should he be held accountable to you for so much as the time of day? Much less a list of his best customers so you and your buddies could track them down and harrass them with this nonsense. Pissing off your best customers isn't a brilliant idea. I don't know why you think he owes you that.

Bret started on this board by posting how great his product was. He followed by offering tech info and touting his shop/self. He did so as a non sponsor. He did become a sponsor for a short time selling ported throttle bodies if I remember correctly.
He then took over grinding cams for LE (also a non sponsor at the time). At this point he began talking down/negatively to all of the other established vendors/members that produced similar product. At around the same time LE became a sponsor and Bret felt legitimized as a co-sponsor of sorts.
At this point his claims of being better than everyone started to fly around the board. He claimed to be second to none and challanged everyone from Joe O. to Comp Cams. People began posting similar interations of his claims. Meanwhile, no results, customers, cars, shops, or records stood to suport these wild claims.
Somehow over time, word of mouth or propoganda established his name on the board. Members began to post results from his cam designs that were in line with dozens of other shops. Nothing special or a standout yet people that had never dealt with him began recomending him. Newbies began praising and following.
Now the problem lies in the fact that real money is moved around because of these words. No background, company information or personal qualifications ever made it to the board. Only an online reputation, which he created.
Is he a bad guy? I don't know him and I'm not making that claim.
Is he dishonest? Not that I know of, but he hasn't been completely truthful with his unsubtantiated claims.
Real people are sending real money to someone they have never met. They really know nothing about him, his company or his previous history.
As Michael has asked, why not subtantiate the claims, the ego and the history?
The "claim" he made in this thread was he built a couple of motors and people bought them with money. This "unsubstantiated claim" was said to be BS. Thanks for saving the world from the man behind the curtain.
Man, you guys really need to get lives of your own.

Well, I am one of the abovementioned newbies to modding LT1s who has contributed to 'moving money around' through my selection of vendors based on info found here. This forum had enough real information and data to help me greatly with those decisions. I quickly found a majority of LE and AI customers who were very happy with their results, and had numbers to back it up. Sure, there are others mentioned once in a while, but these two seemed most prominent to me. I'd call that good substantiation that their stuff works pretty well. It was the determining factor for my initial interest in doing business with one or the other.
When I posted questions, LE and Bret frequently helped me answer them. Eventually I started sending them PM's and emails, too, and they were all answered. That's time spent building a relationship with a potential customer. There may be dozens of others who can accomplish the same thing, but where are they when a new guy here is looking for proven combos and tech advice? If other vendors had offered as much help, they might have gotten my attention and business instead. But, none did. To a non-expert like me, the advice is as important as the parts are. Probably more important. So, they got my business.
Along the way, I've managed to spend several thousand dollars on supporting parts recommended by these guys, moving a significant chunk of that money to other vendors on this board. Seems like a good deal for all, if you ask me.
With all the dozens (hundreds?) of hours I spend around here, I never got the impression that Bret's opinions were being pushed without substantiation, but I guess you can find anything you are looking for if you really want to.
Anyway, I owe a lot to MANY experienced guys around here who are helping me along the way and make this the teriffic site it is, Bret included.

Bret, both before and after my purchase from Lloyd was extremely helpful in answering tons of my ?'s during the process of both my build-ups. I probably have over 100 hundred PM's from him where he helped me out in one way or another... including when I blew up my first LE2 setup due to a stupid mistake on my part.
Bret even spec'd out the shortblock that is running in my car right this second, no complaints whatsoever.

That’s what I usually do too. The pissing matches around here get really old. I’ve been on this board for a while (and have done business with a lot of past & present LTx sponsors/vendors…Ai, BRE, Combination Motorsports, Thunder, LG, etc.) and can honestly say that Bret is a standup guy and really knows his ****. We should be thankful to have him on this board.
This is just a question so please don't take offense. Do you build engines for a living? Or grind cams for a living? Port heads for that matter? What exactly is your qualifications that make you feel entitled to question their expertise on this subject? I think this is a fair question also.
Again no offence intended.

No offense taken at all, Dave.
No, I do not build engines for a living (I'm a total amateur at it - I've done 5 total in my life) nor do I grind cams or port heads. I'm a little baffled why you feel you need qualifications to question someone's expertise - you ask for referrals and samples of work before you let someone install ceramic tile in your kitchen, and I hope you would ask for some credentials and track record before letting someone operate on you or a loved one. I ask, because the BS flows easily on the internet and I encounter unqualified people in my profession daily.
If someone questioned your credentials or qualifications, wouldn't you provide whatever you needed to prove otherwise? I'm questioned in court at least once a year on mine. If you're legit, there's no reason to withhold them. BRE should be countering with names, victories, timeslips, etc. for all the engines they build, and not encouraging the fanbase to counter with stories of great customer service - nobody questioned customer service.
Don't be put off by the question, but rather the answer that hasn't been provided...and probably won't.
