96 camaro fans/ap fuse blowing
96 camaro fans/ap fuse blowing
My 96 lt1 camaro has codes p1641, p1642 and p0412. The a/p fan fuse will blow instantly when the car starts. The fans will only work if jumped. I am wondering why the fuse keeps on blowing, and why this is affecting the fans and air pump. Thanks
Re: 96 camaro fans/ap fuse blowing
By “a/p” fuse I assume you mean the fuse in the AIR pump fuse in the under hood box. Typically that fuse blows because the AIR pump is frozen up and drawing excessive amps. Usually, you can prevent the fuse from blowing by unplugging the AIR pump. Then replace the fuse and the code will clear. In OBD-2 there are other codes that set when the engine is running, and the PCM tries to cycle the AIR pump, looking for lean reading on the pre-cat O2 sensors to confirm the pump is operating.
Not sure if that code is related to the fans not working. Check the code description in the 1996 factory service manual.

Clear the AIR pump code, then address the fans.
The two codes are for the fan relays control circuits. Did you check the fuse in the under hood box for the fan relays? And the fans don’t turn on at low speed when you turn the A/C on? And they don’t appear to turn on low speed when the coolant reaches 226°F, switch to high speed at 235°F? Those are the only times the fans will operate, other than when a couple specific codes are set.

Re: 96 camaro fans/ap fuse blowing
There was actually a “recall” on the AIR system for 95-97. They added additional hardware to prevent the exhaust that flows out of a faulty check valve from reaching the pump. That's what corrodes the pump and it seizes up. Sounds like recall may not have been done on your car.
