Keep blowing 20 amp fuse for fans

Can anyone help me with a problem I am having with my sons 96 ta. he keeps blowing the 20 amp fuse for the fans . This happens only after long runs on the freeway but when he comes to stop and go driving it heats up so the fans are not coming on. We replace the fuse 4 times. I think there are only 3 things on this ciruit. Airpump and the 2 fans. We took it to a local shop they let idle for hour and it wouldnt blow the fuse .Any suggestions ?

That's a tough one cause your problem is on the control side of the relays, NOT on the fan or the contact side of the relays. That fuse only powers the relays coils and not the fans them selves. The airpump is out of the picture once the engine is warmed so that's not likely.

My GM shop manual of all things is missing the pages for the fan schematics but the #3 fan relay is different than the other 2. Until I can find a better schematic try replacing the fuse and pull the #3 fan relay and test it again. I'll see what I can find.

The AIR pump could blow the fuse and you would not realize it until the fans were needed. It's the most common source of a blown fuse on that circuit. There are fan schematics on my Tech Page.
