Callies crank 3.750" , Manley parabolic I-beam rods 6.00", JE or Mahle race pistons. Those parts will stand up to any NA or juiced motor you will be able to build for under 10k. AFR heads ported is a good start (that's what I have) and compcams has the most advanced hydraulic roller profiles, go with crane cams if you are going solid roller. Build the long-rod 383, with those light internals you can still rev it.

Secondly, a main-studded 2-bolt block will take 500hp, but not anymore than that, and if you are juicing it...you need to do a splayed cap conversion, or find a corvette 4-bolt block. C&A ZGS rings are worth 20hp.

This would head you in the right direction. you will also have to do stage 3 heads or even AFR heads. I would look more at the 383 or the 396 short blocks. http://www.cmotorsports.com/engine/l...ort-block.html

this is another good place http://www.golenengineservice.com/

All kidding aside, 'bird is right.... it aint easy and Mystic is right too... a GM 847 won't get you there. It is possible NA... you just need the right top end and then you need the real hard part of the equation... the right suspension/car setup.

With your budget, it won't work..... not the way I'd want to build it anyways. That said, I'd shoot for a 400-425 rwhp build and put the juice to it in vast quantities.

Yeah $13K might cover the motor to make 500rwhp.... doesn't leave much for the rest of the parts you need.

I'll have to add up the total on one that I'm doing now and see if that $13K is enough for 500rwhp.

Re: 355 build up ?

large compression and run tanks of 105 through it. Though a daily driver that runs on 105 doesnt actually seem very daily driverish anymore. Single plane EFI intake through throated AFR heads, 12.5:1, solid roller, fully forged lightweight stroker assy (profiled, knifed, drilled, coated crank) stuffed into a 4 bolt vette block.

Dont forget your type R stikers, them stuffs are important.

Yeah, I think a lot of guys run into this problem with their budgeting. They build a motor with 99% of their cash, stick it on the motor stand and say to themselves, "That thing will make 500 rwhp". That's only half the battle though. Seen many scrapped projects that sound very similar.

If you're budgeting for a project like this, then you'd better evaluate things better. If you don't have headers already.... well, you're going to need them. If you don't have a good exhaust system... gonna need that too. You're new engine is going to need a lot more fuel, so you'll have money there. The suspension is going to really need some work if you care anything about cutting good 60' times. You also need a 12-bolt or 9" rear and those aren't exactly cheap.

Off the top of my head... I can thing of ~4k worth of stuff OTHER than the engine that needs to be in place. Who said going fast was gonna be cheap?

Slap em' for me the next time you see them.

Re: 355 build up ?

while we're talking about this, can someone give a rundown(approximates will work) of motor costs only for a 500+rwhp car.

Re: 355 build up ?

Depends on what you want to do man.... It's seriously $10-$13K for the motor. It's WAY too much to get into without lots of talks on what you want etc....

Well, you are forgetting block prep and the rotating assy. for one. Also, the stuff you mentioned isn't cheap. If you are buying all new parts and having someone else do the work, figure at least $6K for the parts you mention. Add a couple of thou for the fuel system and ECU modifications/tuning and $3-4K for the short block and you are up to ~$12K already. And you still have to have the tranny, drivetrain, and exhaust system and get everything taken apart and put back together.

Re: 355 build up ?

yeah, i understand that, but we were talking about "motor only".

i'm glad to see the motor work was being thrown into the equation...thats taken care of, so i dont have to worry there.

Re: 355 build up ?

Remeber this includes a $1000+ intake.

Even with a good deal on some nice castings.... figure $2500-$3500 for some nice heads complete.

$900-$1000 for valvetrain w/out rockers/shaftmounts.

If SR a good rocker and a stud girdle or shaft mounts = $500-$800

$700-$1000 for machine work on the block, if you do everything to the block $2000 in machinework can happen w/ balancing.

Bottom end....

$400-$700 for rods H Beam or Lunati Pro Mod
$600-$900 for a 4340 crank, Eagle, Scat, Callies Crank
$500-$900 for pistons
$100-$250 for rings
$100-$250 for bearings (coated is the high end)

Add in gaskets, studs, fasteners, oil pans, pickups, oil pumps, timing covers, nick knacks

Oh and a assembly fee.....

Just going the basic route it's $9k easy.... if you want the good things that add little gains (which add up to one big gain) take the high end of all of those things. $12K without the knick nacks....

That's just a range to look at
