Hot Rod had an article last year where they knocked ~5º of timing out, installed a knock sensor and made a dyno pull with 91 octane. No detonation audible or otherwise and the engine made close to 790 hp as I recall. With a few cooling system upgrades and a fatter a/f ratio, I have no doubt the thing could live on the street.

That HOSS didn't loose much at all to pump gas over the factory spect's. The 12-1 one made more than the factory spect's.
That's 647RWHP with an auto(Turbo 350 or Glide) On pump gas, with the option for MORE.

Even with a good deal on some nice castings.... figure $2500-$3500 for some nice heads complete.
$900-$1000 for valvetrain w/out rockers/shaftmounts.
If SR a good rocker and a stud girdle or shaft mounts = $500-$800
$700-$1000 for machine work on the block, if you do everything to the block $2000 in machinework can happen w/ balancing.
Bottom end....
$400-$700 for rods H Beam or Lunati Pro Mod
$600-$900 for a 4340 crank, Eagle, Scat, Callies Crank
$500-$900 for pistons
$100-$250 for rings
$100-$250 for bearings (coated is the high end)
Add in gaskets, studs, fasteners, oil pans, pickups, oil pumps, timing covers, nick knacks
Oh and a assembly fee.....
Just going the basic route it's $9k easy.... if you want the good things that add little gains (which add up to one big gain) take the high end of all of those things. $12K without the knick nacks....
That's just a range to look at

"$1000+ for intake"...does this include rails, elbow, EFI conversion, and TB?
"$900-$1000 for valvetrain w/out rockers/shaftmounts." I'm assuming the camshaft is in there?
"$700-$1000 for machine work on the block"...exactly what all are we talking abot here? just basic machining for like a 355?
Would some top of the line AFR's be enough head, or would converting some SBC's be necessary?
Bang for the buck (wise), it looks like staying with a good set of LTx heads, a ported intake, damn good valvetrain, and a custom cam is the way to go. And just settle for 450ish rwhp. I dont think it would be worth the extra "cabbage" for the 50+ rwhp you would gain!

That 540 don't.
It's not that hard of a swap.Headers are a big thing but several people make them.Working on it HAS to come under the title of "a labor of LOVE"
Re: 355 build up ?
True...
For some reason, i just dont wanna do a BB. Guess i dont wanna hear people mouths about how it's not an LT1 or whatever. Which they'll be saying the same thing if they see a single plane under the hood!

A set of 215RR LT castings is not cheap. Bare ones make you want to look for good SBC castings and convert them (which some places can do this cheap now) A CNC ported AFR 215 is over $3000k without parts.
For me.... the $1000 set of 18X I saw on ebay with conversion to LT1 and some porting would be a steel compared to AFR RR's
Oh now don't forget valves.... $240-250 for a set of Ferrea 6000, $350 for Ferrea Competition Series Valves and $700 for Hollow Stem Versions.
Springs, Ti Retainers, locators, shims, locks, seals, setup, assembly, flow tests and lapping....

396 cubes: H Beams, Dragonslayer Crank, Custom Pistons
Race preped block: bushed lifter bores, 4 bolt conversion etc...
TFS Heads: Stage 3 Meaux Porting, Hollow Stem Valves
Super Vic Single Plane: Ported to match heads
Hyd Roller Valvetrain: all the good stuff ;-)
It's for a street car with a small 2800 stall. Tame idle and built to live a long time and take on a new ZO6 in a 3500lbs car. Some of the same tricks in the LS7 I'm using here without all the Ti. I get the advantage of no OEM limits and emissions.
I'm working on a bolt in 388 cube crate motor... just talking to some people about short blocks and heads now to get exactly what I want. A SR will probably be in there and both aftermarket and stock castings... trying for a economical street high 400's-500rwhp for $10K or less.... Might be tough but that's the hope.
