Ok, what are you cats brewing up now?
Did I ever tell ya the story of the 381 with a set of sb2.2 heads and a mild solid roller cam?
Not an LT1 but man did that thing scream today!

This motor has 25 hp on me EVERYWHERE in the powerband! Those sb2.2's are some mothers too.
We were talking about this in Advanced Tech... you remember the thread about 18º heads, port lengths and avg runner volumes? Well this engine is proof, case and point.
The cylinder heads on this one were straight off a Busch engine. Port volume is ~275cc with 48cc chambers and I'll have more info on this tomorrow. Don't know the minimum cross section area on them but I'm sure this gentlemen has the paperwork. I'd like to know the details for my database.
Anyhow, these heads... which in most people's opinions would be way too large, are making ~670hp @ 6750 rpm with a teeny 232 @.050 Cam Motion solid roller cam! Never mind that torque is quite a bit better (average) than my 15º head LT1. So yeah... this one would be tough to keep up with.
I don't feel bad though. He has better than $5k more in this engine than I do in mine.
This engine could be a poster child for the mantra, "A great set of heads and a smaller camshaft can = big HP". Not to mention... this thing is going to be very drivable. Grandma will never know a thing.

edit: Whoops, I was off on the rpm peak. It was 6750 rpm. I just jotted stuff down while we were testing the thing and I got a few numbers jumbled in the ol' noggin.

Definitely strong!
Imagine what that same engine would do with a decent sized solid? Believe it or not but a 240-ish solid in a stroker is a dream to drive with the right tune. In this motor it'd make right at 700 hp right at 7k or maybe a little beyond. Not bad considering that the intake on this one is a straight out of the box spider sb2.2 intake with no porting.
Not bad at all.

I've heard some interesting things about drivability and port shape. All of it makes sense in context with a LS1 port... but even those are big, that's why I'm thinking about the C5R's same sized port as a ported LS6 but 30-40cfm more flow...
So what you thinking about with the new motor of yours and whos the lucky SOB to get your old one?

Re: 355 build up ?
Marshall,
I do not know all the details of this build up. I made a recommendation (cylinder heads) and camshaft grinder but that's as far as it went. I do know that there are some really nice CP reverse dome pistons in the thing, a Kryptonite crank and Oliver rods..... big $$ bottom end which I would not have recommended.
Bret,
The C5R project sounds like a lot of fun. Do you want a Z06 to try it out on or you planning to swap this onto the Maro?
The new motor is coming along. Heads are at Ultra Pro Machine, block is at the machine shop and everything will probably be coming together before the end of July (fingers crossed).
The old motor will go up for sale. Jason Short has first shot at it although I did promise Chuck R a chance to purchase the heads and intake should the engine ever go up for sale. So... we'll just have to wait and see where it all ends up. On top of that, there are 2 other guys in our Corvette club who'd fork over the money in a heartbeat. So it will definitely find a happy home in the end.

Re: 355 build up ?
MG,
Jason would learn more if he built it himself! I would love that motor, but WTf do I learn from it? Young guys need to learn how to do this stuff before they get it. Old guys fork over the $$ for what they don't know
OH BW F1 Qualifing for Spain is on right now!
The C5R deal is for me unless someone wants to spend the coin... they are all a labor of love but I'm intrigued by the C5R's and want some street cred from my ride. Then again if someone wanted to "sponsor" that for their car I would put a forged crank and some custom CP's in it. I'm thinking stock crank and some worked over Mahles with a Eagle H beam but that's if it's for me!
The most expensinve thing on the motor will be the Jesel shaft mounts!

Re: 355 build up ?
Aye, those rockers will eat into a budget real quick. On top of that... C5R stuff just isn't the kind of thing you find everywhere, so no used stuff.
I know you don't want to hear this but.... you should look at both the Jesel and T&D. I think you'll find the T&D set to be a little better manufactured. That's if T&D makes a set for the C5R?? Just basing this off what I've seen from both companies.
Good luck.
