Re: More GTO news....

You're right Z284ever

One post about the GTO, then the Camaro, then weight, then safety, then fuel economy, back to weight, back to fuel economy........

I think I'm gonna go nuts trying to follow it!

At least RP stepped in and calmed down one trouble spot

Actually, I'm still very concerned about that one thing.....but I'm gonna let it lie for a while.

Some people want to keep saying "the new cars are pigs compared to 3rd Gens" etc etc etc... well, we now have frontal airbags, side air bags, curtain airbags, ABS, bigger wheels and tires, better safety structures, and a host of other things that weren't around 20 years ago, and quite frankly... I'm very happy they are around today... unfortuantely they add some weight. It's reality. It's for the best. Get over it.

2) Size:
I've continually said this size issue gets blown out of proportion (no pun intended) on this board... make the car a size that fits the styling, and all is good. Only someone who really wants to complain about something is going to notice or care if a car is 2 or 3 inches longer than some "maximum acceptable length" number that someone pulls out of thin air!!! .

That said, I think the size needs to accomodate the styling. I think the new Mustang looks HUGE... but that is because it is so strongly styled after the old Mustangs that were so much smaller.... it makes the new car look gigantic and odd... this does not mean that the size is wrong... it just means the size is wrong for the styling... IMO.

ohthankyaJesus..........

right on, Darth......for those of you who missed it....
...".....the size needs to accomodate the styling......"

(this is probably a good place to insert something about 5mph bumpers...which have got to be on the car......that may or may not increase the size....but if the styling's right, I'd say you'd have a hard time telling the difference of 2 inches........esp. with less overhang.......)

Anyone who thinks that we don't look at the size is just plain wrongwrongwrong......all dimensions are looked at very carefully.....for all competitors and benchmarks.

I can tell you this: We will NOT make everyone happy. I don't care WHO the manufacturer is, some people will not be happy. For example, any reasonable person has got to believe that the new Z06 is one great value in terms of what it will do.....acceleration, braking, handling....fuel economy...emissions.......even ride.......and yet there is a small group out there that thinks the car is a pig or it's hideous or any number of other nasty remarks that can be thought up.

pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease.....I'm begging you......move on to something else...... "much ado about nothing..."

By the way....anyone who thinks the 4th gen SS was a pig......meet me at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park....and let me show you what one of these 'pigs' can do...........and how many much higher priced cars they can put to shame.......THREE YEARS after they went out of production.

Dear Mr. Red Planet,

Will there be someplace for me to mount a turret on my 5th Gen? This is a make or break issue for me.

The fourth gen f-body was by far the best bang for the buck car of all time, performace wise. Best Quote Ever Red!

Re: More GTO news....

So EVERY motorcyclist is destined to die by left-turning car?
If absolute safety is your goal, it can't be had, even forsaking motorcycles.
Notice - I did not say EVERY motorcyclist will die due to someone turning left in front of them. I said it seemed inevitable that it would someday happen to ME. BIG difference. It was a comment on the RELATIVE safety of motorcycling... which historically, is quite poor. (you're not going to dispute that too are you? ). And who, besides you, said anything about absolute safety? That's not available anywhere, not even on a bus. I seek a vehicle which is fun but is ALSO safe.
And light weight is more FUN anyway!
Only to a point. The point being, when occupants start feeling insecure due to being in a crackerbox or teeny tin can. I couldn't care less that there's a Lotus-whatever that can beat me on a road course. The car I drive daily has to meet certain criteria (being autocross King is not one of them BTW ). I look for a rumbling, torquey V8; a reasonable back seat for my two tykes; swoopy styling; good crashworthiness and some heft so the car doesn't feel like a tonka toy on the road; and good value.
And of course lighter-weight cars CAN be made safe.
Sure they can. NHTSA says there are many 5-star small cars. But read the fine print. The 5 stars are only in crashes with OTHER cars of the same size. The next time an extended cab F150 runs a red light and is about to T-bone you... why don't you just hop off your motorcycle or out of your little 5-star econobox, trot over to the driver and say the following: "Excuse me sir... excuse me? Can you please hang up your phone and pay attention to the red light you just ran? And I hope you realize, I prefer to have cars of the SAME SIZE or smaller run into me." The problem is, real world traffic is a jungle. Big vehicles bully little ones in crashes. Too bad for you if you don't have some mass on your side.
Global supplies are leveling off, and demand is escalating. Prices will continue to rise
Ya sure. Global supplies are available all over, just a matter of drilling more places. There's plenty in the mideast too, and there's a strong economic incentive for producers to sell it (as opposed to the games being played currently by thug terrorists). Ultimately the incentive will win out over the fear. And prices rising? Meh. Prices are just now approaching what they should be, in a historical context. It's still twice as much in 'socially advanced' Europe.
I don't fear terrorism as much as I fear the authoritarian/totalitarian leanings of our current government. Patriot acts, holding citizens with no charges indefinitely, based merely on calling them "terrists", etc. Creepy stuff.
Hmm. 911 was pretty creepy stuff too
There's optimism, and then there's sticking your head in the sand. Times will change. And we as a nation are woefully unprepared.
Ba-loney. Why should I worry? For every power-craving muscle car fiend like me, there are ten liberals in SanFran puttering around in a Toyota Prius Seriously though... performance cars have changed. The new Grand Prix GXP belts out 303 HP and plenty of torque, but also gets highway MPG in the high twenties... this in a fairly large five-passenger sedan. So tell me again, what I am supposed to worry about?
gimme what I want! That is, a 3000 lb. Camaro with at least 300hp,
Get with reality man. The Cobalt SS weighs about 3000 lb. THAT is more what you should be setting your sights on. I don't see the Camaro ever being a 3000 lb car again. That's Cobalt territory. For that matter it's been DECADES (if ever!) since there was a Camaro like that. 2nd gen? nope. 3rd gen? I remember when the 1982 Camaro was first released... Car & Drivel did a review and admired the styling but moaned like an old lady about it weighing 3400 lb. I looked at it and said to myself "Wow. That car is flat out GORGEOUS. Who cares about it being a little heavy." Then the 4gens came out. Roughly the same weight... more power, more features, more safety, and more distinctive, radical styling. I was sold

Tonight I went cruising on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. It's a major event each year here, the Woodward Dream Cruise, each August. Some of us can't wait for the real event this Saturday though! So there was a happy clog of all kinds of muscle and collector cars on the avenue, with a bright moon overhead. Chevelles, GTO's of all ages, Camaros, boosted Regals, Firebirds and tri-5 Chevys. I wondered... "gee I wonder if these guys are concerned about their car's WEIGHT"! Nope. Just having a blast with their overpowered, overpolished street machines

Welp, just my impressions. To ME, Mustang sized or heaven forbid, larger - is too big. Maybe that's just me though.
