Alpha: All things to all enthusiasts.
The styling is what compromised the Camaro's interior space. The GTO
(which shares a lot of Camaro DNA) had a sedan like backseat also was teased for it's jelly bean styling. The Camaro's chopped green house really limited space. Also the interior of the Camaro seems to have less interior space inside between then dash and backseat. It feels like GM took some length out the Camaro between the GTO, though I know that is not true.

7lb per seat is not accurate for the BMW cars though. I was talking to a few of the guys at Magna a while back at one of their dog-n-pony shows about seats and they were saying a 4 way power to manual is 7-10lb, but BMW seats have a LOT more to them than that. Add in the side bolsters that actually grip tighter in the turns, the movable lower section, the lumbar sections.... you're talking about one HEAVY seat. A Camaro need not all those gizmos - and at that point you're realistically talking 20lb-30lb a seat.

Z28Wilson, yes everything adds up but how exactly are we going to drop 200lbs? It seems that wishful thinking far exceeds commonsense... unless somebody can come up with tangible ways in which to drop a heap of weight... on a car (BMW M3) that is already rich in weight saving features.

And, have a read of how BMW managed to trim 400lbs off the M3 GTS (i.e. 3300 lbs)...
Consistent lightweight technology.
Consistent lightweight construction, adjustable aerodynamic units, an increase in engine size and output on the V8 high-speed power unit and suspension technology meeting all the requirements of motorsport – all this gives the BMW M3 GTS a top position among high-performance cars built for Clubsport racing. Unladen weight according to the DIN standard is less than 1,500 kg (3,300 lb), the lightweight body comes with special mounts for six-point seat belts and a rollcage fitted behind the B-pillar.
Through its design and construction, the materials used and its special equipment, the BMW M3 GTS is a lightweight performer all the way, offering a genuine motorsport driving experience in every respect. In addition to the carbon fibre roof already featured as standard on the BMW M3, weight is consistently optimised by features such as silencers made of titanium, the extra-light centre console and door linings, the omission of rear seats, automatic air conditioning and an audio system, as well as sound insulation tailored specifically to this very special model.

Whats funny is, having seat time in both the Camaro and the G8...it feels like GM did reengineer Zeta for Camaro. There is not really one part aside from the powertrains that carry over. Everything is similar..but different..like the Keyfobs. I was suprised to find that none of the brake part numbers even carry over.
Yeah the styling. But I think if GM had spent the money to re-engineer Zeta, to the same extent that Ford re-engineered DEW98 to create Mustang's D2C, the interior space would have been far less compromised. Ford was able to rework the floorpan, structure, etc., in order to lower the 2+2 seating position on the Mustang for better ergonomics and driving position. In contrast, I'm pretty sure that the Camaro's seats are in the same relative positions as they would be on the G8.
