v6 to carberated v8
I am beginning the planning of a project involving swaping out the v6 in my 94 5sp camaro for a 350 carberated v8, and i was wondering if you people could give me some insight as to what kinds of engine mounts i would need, if the current T5 tranny and rear end is at all useable, what kinds of electrical work would have to be done in order to keep as many assesories running as possible e.g. heating, and whatever other problems that i might run into. This v8 is a going to have a full performance upgrade including dyno and head work so i'll need a somewhat beefy tranny and rear end. I know you people won't want to tell me everything i'll need to know, so if i could at least get the names of some good manuals that will tell me what have to work with such as bell housing clearance as well as many other things. Also if i ditch the computer what will i lose other than the fuel injection? i'd appreciate any advice thanks, brodman
another serious problem i would run into that just dawned on me is if the air bags will still work and if i wanted to ditch them how do i remove the computer w/o any risk of setting the air bags off

You might want to post this on the V6 board to see what they have done. You might also want to go to LT1 Tech and do a search on "carb conversions" because those threads will highlight the key issues like fitting the distributor under the cowl, and getting a hood to clear the carb/intake.
You need to be a liitle more specific in what you plan to use the car for (street, track, combination) and which engine platform you are considering (Gen 1 or Gen II) since this determines which transmissions will fit, what you need to do to accomodate the carb, what to do about the competer, etc. The airbags are the least of your worries. Get a 4th Gen F-Body manual like a Chilton's... the deactivation and removal procedure is covered there.
In general, you are making at least two mistakes, if this is a street car:
-unless your 94 V6 has some unusual investment in appearance mods, or some extreme sentimental value, it would be a lot easier and less expensive to sell the V6 and buy a 4th Gen that already has a V8. Your V6 chassis lacks a positraction rear axle, probably lacks rear wheel disc brakes, will need beefier springs, may need the radiator swapped to handle the reverse flow cooling if you are thinking LT1, etc.
-you will never pass any sort of emissions (rolling or visual) with a carb'd motor, gas mileage will suck, access to the distributor will be impossible, plugs will foul, etc.
Now if its a track setup you are after, and you are just using your current car as a "donor" car for the body, it might be a little different.
But you need to clarify what your intent is with regard to the conversion. I suspect this sort of thing gets thrashed out daily on the V6 board, and I recommend you repost it there. In fact, I'll help by moving it over there so you don't have to retype it.

Some things to consider: you will need to alter the cowl area for distributor clearance. This will also render your wipers unuseable. The v-6 trans uses a smaller clutch disc than the v-8. You will have to re-plumb the fuel system.the power steering hoses will need to be custom made. The alternator bracket may be to tall, requiring a custom bracket. Etc. etc....I performed this swap to be conform to SCCA A/S rules, it's alot of work and probably not worth the effort.
ok i see what you guys are talking about and all of that stuff has crossed my mind once or twice, but i still want a carberated V8 in my camaro. i still want this car streetable and that means i'll need headlights, whipers, tail lights, signals, power steering, power windows, ect. I already plan on getting a new rear end, and the tranny is still up in the air. don't worry about the engine part i've got that covered, it's just getting in the car is the problem. by the way if you guys want to know what i have to work with as far as tools go you can check out my website at www.westracingheads.com. also keep in mind i'll expect this car to run 12's w/o nos when i'm done to let you know what it'll need to be able to take. oh and the reason i want a V8 in this as apposed to buying a z28 is because i want to be able to play around with the engine on my dyno and i really really really love everything about my car, except of course the lack of V8. Please try and help figure out what other problems i might run into so i can plan ahead before i start tearing it apart because i want to limit it's downtime as much as possible
thanks

I am planning the exact same swap myself. I am about 80% done with the engine build up. The swap will probably begin in 3 weeks. I do know the cowl will require some modification but its nothing that can't be done. I can't seem to find anyone that has done the same thing for the street but a few for the track. http://ramairta.esmartweb.com/page10.html

The above sites contain some vague info and pics. I we run low profile intake manifold and air cleaners we should be allright. I am in need of help and info myself so we should exchange any info we come across. E-Mail me at Adam@DFI-GC.COM

Wow! I didn't realize others were even considering this. I'm about to just start it. I'm buying the 350 4 bolt block from a friend this weekend. I'm doing the exact same thing. Mine's a White 94 Camaro V6. I love this car, but it's just not powerful enough for me. I would love to keep this a daily driver, but I doubt that's gonna happen. Anyway, I'd love to hear how your projects go. Both of you please keep in touch: gold_thorvy@hotmail.com or set up a website and send me a link. Thanks.

This is excellent! The last time I posted somehting of this nature, I got flamed for not putting in an LT1. I want something easily and cheaply tuneable that is unique. We will keep in touch. Adam@dfi-gc.com
