Re: ss vs 30000gt

Anyone that dumps the clutch in an AWD deserves to see their transmsmission and transfer case parts all over the track. Side-stepping the clutch at redline is not the right way to launch any car. A quick slip from 4500 is enough for killer 60ft's and smoke from the front tires (no front LSD). I've never broken anything in hundreds of 1/4 mile runs. I have broken 2 shift forks (in different cars) but that was due to missing rubber stops in the shifter assembly.

Anyway, that's the fun part about going to the track. It may be a close race or it may be a blowout. You never know till the light turns green.

Agreed. Many don't realize this however and simply dump the clutch, resulting in very premature tranny and diff repairs.

Of coarse, many f-body guys break the rear from severe launches as well.

Whoa, another red 2005 Legacy GT owner on the board! Try beating people with the wagon, their expressions are even better...

Re: ss vs 30000gt

Not sure what a 30000GT is???
i just wanted to say that I have a 94 LT1 and a 92 VR4. I know the thread is about LS1's but i figure the driving characteristics are similar. I couldn't tell you which one is faster but they are both fun for their own reasons. I do know which one is more fun to drive and gets more attention. The VR4. Anyway, just my thoughts.

John M - How do you like your Legacy GT? I test drove one the other night while looking for a replacement for my Buick. Very impressive. Are 12s achievable without making the car noisier? What did they do to the engine to detune it from STi specs?

Re: ss vs 30000gt

It's an awesome package. You can cruise when you want and haul *** when you want, all without attracing any attention. Most people mistake it for a Camry.

The shortblock is all the same as the STi (one vendor quoted "they're identical except for the red valve cover.") In the interest of instant spool, it's just got a smaller turbo (too small for much quicker than stock, unfortunately; it can't reach even 14 psi in 1st and 2nd gear). It connects directly to the TMIC which is different than all other Subarus so the aftermarket is busy making compatible turbos.

I'd bet you can run 12s quietly. Having 2 mufflers means you can use a more restrictive muffler than you could if there was only one. I'm also considering keeping the stock catback and using a downpipe with built-in electric cutout for when I want to surprise somebody. I could have a FP Green turbo, black anodized FMIC, and stock cat-back to really bait people

You're dead wrong. First gen VR4s are weaker and heavier, 13.7-14.0@100-101mph. A stock 97-99 VR4 can trap as high as 105mph (Edmunds 1999) and ET as low as 13 flat. My boys 98 all stock VR4 ran a 13.08@104.3 second time on the strip.
https://youtu.be/kBTwc8h-cnI - bone stock '99 VR4 running a 13.2@102.7.
An LT1 would lose badly to a 94-99 VR4 and an SS is a driver's race with the edge to the VR4 from a dig and edge to the SS off a roll.
I owned a 96 VR4, wish I had never sold it. Best of 13.3@103.7mph bone stock, added a K&N drop in filter and down pipe alone and ran a 12.87@105.5. with a boost controller i would have been mid 12s @ 107 easy for a total cost of less than $500.

The Dodge Stealth Twin Turbos can run high 12s stock, they didn't have all the electronic **** like 4WS/Active Aero. Even better is the J spec GTO MR which beat the notorious R32 and R33 Nissan Skyline GTR - https://youtu.be/fwps3TVcJMM (beats the R32 by a car length over a mile distance) https://youtu.be/ukVsqR66ldE (edges out the R33 running a 12.88). The GTO MR can easily waste a stock SS, they run 12.7-12.9@106-108mph (lighter and shorter gearing).

I know this post is old, but Camaro owners on here are being delusional. I beat a 2016 Mustang GT from a 20 roll all the way to 120mph when he slowly reeled me in and passed me - all I had was the k&n drop in filter.
