When I cut mine, the spindles didnt seem to heat up too much. They act like big heat sinks, I think they dissappate heat quickly enough that it wont get near hot enough to cause any damage. And really, it isnt that bad with a sawzall, my hands returned to their normal color a few minutes after cutting

Any distortion there could cause a real problem. Also, any spatter or slag byproduct, such as is produced in welding, could cause the same “non-flat” bolt up surface problem.
done right a plasma cutter can give a pretty nice edge... but yeah it operates like a TIG welder that's way too hot, and has a compressed air supply blowing the molten metal out the back side of the cut. Cut through inch and half mild steel in no time flat.... of course that doesn't sound like the best way to handle this project I guess.

The easiest tool I have used to cut off the ears was a hand-held band saw. It didn’t vibrate like a Sawsall, and I didn’t have to keep spraying oil on the cut. It took 20 minutes for all 4 LT1 ears.
Band saw eh? Sounds like it's time to checkout Sears tool section. Thanks Bob.

ALL POTENTIAL BRACKET BUYERS:
I should have a decision by Monday evening on whether or not I will make another run of brackets. From the # of committed buyers, it appears that 33 sets would be adequate.

Steve, if you buy a band saw, be sure that it will be able to fit within the wheel well at the angles needed to make the cuts (turning the steering wheel helps a lot with those angles). It is MUCH easier to do the conversion with the steering knuckles on the car. The only time I used a band saw, the knuckles were already off and were clamped in a vise.

Hopeful C5 brakers,

I have decided to make 33 more sets of my adaptor brackets. There will not be another group purchase on these; period. I am still waiting for one last price quote, so I can’t quote a definite price to Speed Specialty yet, and therefore, they can’t quote a price to you yet. I would guess that the group purchase price would be under $290/set, but that is just my guess. The final group price should be available by 6/10 or so.

I don’t think Speed Specialty wants you to do anything at this time; just hold on for a few days and they should post here. Kaiser has my size and alloy and temper of aluminum billet in stock for shipping, so if everything goes smoothly, the brackets could ship at the beginning of July.

I bought one of the last sets of brackets from the last purchase but I noticed you dont quite have enough people commited for this run. If need be put me down for a set.

You're #34, but I still haven't heard from "backrdrunner" , and 4 people are sitting the fense right now, so it looks like you still may get a set.
