By the time any steel gets to the filter it has done it's damage. It won't take the rest of the metal out ie. babbit,copper,alum.ect.When it is in the filter it is already trapped and done it's damage. No I wouldn't waste my money.

I've used one for years just for extra insurance but racer has a point. I never cut a filter afterwards to see if it caught anything until last month. Wasn't impressed by it to say the least. Fram filter (cheap) but my drain magnet caught more metal than the filter magnet by a long shot.

I have a ceramic speaker magnet stuck to the bottom of my oil filter. When you cut it open after using the filter, there is definately extra stuff there where the magnet was-not much, of course. The oil inters the outside of the filter and moves to the inside so there isn't really any way to tell if the stuff you see would have been small enough to (>40 microns, more or less) to pass through the filter material. Based on the amount of "fur" on the oil drain plug magnet, I'd have to say it probably did very little if anything but what did it hurt? and in my case, at least, the magnet didn't cost anything. Any magnet strong enough to stick would work. Google "Wondermagnets", they got a million of 'em.
