Straight piping: bad idea?

I've got a 97 Z28. One of my friends wants me to cut the muffler off and weld in some pipe where it was. Is it ok to do that? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

You'll probably hate it, unless you like obnoxiously loud, droning, neighbors that hate you and cops pulling you over.

My closest neighbors are about 7 miles away, so they aren't to much of an issue. I did it and it is really really loud. Is this going to adversely affect the performance or longevity of my car? I'm planning on getting a catback this summer.

No, your car will be fine. I ran around without a muffler for a few years and it's really not all that loud with stock manifolds and cats. Now, if you were to de-cat your car and run longtubes into straight pipes, that's when IMO you get into the neighbor and police issues. I drove my stalled auto around town for about 2 days with longtubes into straights and it would SCREAM just trying to leave a stop sign in town. That was funny.

I can vouch for Magnaflow though for your catback. Great flow and good sound at an awesome price!

It might sound good to you, but I guarantee everyone else will hate it, if that matters to you.

Probably a good idea to wear hearing protection.

I had a cutout/dump right before my muffler on my 95 Z that uncapped with 3 bolts...it was loud but I (and my friends) loved it.

It was the best of both worlds...loud fun on the weekends then a quiet rumble on monday morning when I showed up to work.

Nothing screams redneck like a camaro with straight pipes....

well, maybe a jacked up 4x4 with the rebel flag in the back window and straight pipes is worse....

Sounds like something a guy from New Jersey would say.
