squeek squeek squeek

get a squeek squeek squeek on start up, i put some belt dressing on my belt and it stopped, but would come back after a few minutes. so i replaced the belt with a good year gator back, but i still get the squeeking on startup. it'll eventually go away after 15-20 mins after the engine is warm, but its really annoying. if i spray belt dressing on the new belt the squeeking will go away, but come back after a minute or two. what do you all think?? the squeaking noise is coming right about the alternator pulley area.

I know on one of my friends '8? Trans am with an lt4 engine in it, you would hear a squeak until it warms up, and if you looked under the hood the whole alternator was going side to side, making the belt slip and it would squeek

Sounds to me like the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) is going out. There's a rubber ring in that pulley that will expand when it heats up.

Does the squeek happen especially with fast throttle blips when it's cold?

yeah i looked at the alternator and its not moving at all, I will try a belt tensioner b4 i try anything else, the sound is coming right at the alternator, but its not the alt since the belt dressing will make it go away for a few....has to be with the belt and since its a new belt, maybe it just not getting enough tension and slipping around the alt pulley till things heat up then i guess the expanding metal makes up the extra tension it needs? far fetched idea??

not the expanding metal but rather the heated up rubber of the belt... I would say the tensioner is your main culprit..

That is exactly what happened to me too,
it gets really bad when you turn on the ac when the engine is cold. Have a new balancer on order now though.

Might want to check your altenator brackets.. Mine was alittle off and it was causeing a horrible squeaking sound... Mine happend to be the bracket coming off the manifold.. Just loosen it and tighten it back down, there may be a wire under it. Mine stopped after that and i have never had a problem since.. It was really hard to notice that it was crooked.. It was like a hair off.lol

If it is the crank pulley, here is what happens in the worst case scenario:

When the balancer died on my car I was getting bad vibrations while revving, and 7 degrees Knock retard
at $130 they aren't cheap either!
