AFR 195's(street port) vs fully ported stockers???
OK,
So I am building a 383, mainly an NA setup. But I am sure that curiosity will force the bottle into the back of my car at some point. Here is a quick run down of the setup. SCAT 9000 series cast crank, SCAT forged H-beam rods, SRP forged flat-top pistons. Now, what I am trying to decide on is weather or not to go with the AFR LT4 195's. I saw the flow numbers that AFR puts out for these, and almost any well know place that ports LT1 heads(Nu-tek, ComboMotorsports) can do better than 262@.600/194@.600, and the fall back to buying them is then I not only have to spend an extra $300 for them(over stockers). I also have to buy a different intake. I can sell my stockers for $200 to make up for most of the intake. I see a plus to this though. If one day I want to make it a bit faster then I figure all I'll need is to get them hand ported to reach their full potential. So I am open to all opinions, thanks for your help.

You've got the same dilemma going I do. My shortblock is ready (i'm doing 355 w/ 222/230 cam) and I'm trying to decide on the direction for heads.
As far as what people have told me, AFR's are great heads and are better castings than GM's. I was told to consider them an investment for the future. As for bang for the buck, they probably lose to a well ported LT1 casting by some of the guys on the board (like Phil, combo, Lloyd). Everyone seems to be running 380-420rwhp with the setups these guys are creating so the power is there in a LT1 casting.
I'd start with bang for the buck vs. investment. Once you make that decision, than you can decide on direction. I still haven't made this decision.

I went from a set of ported GM castings to a set of 190cc AFRs (blew a head gasket and ruined one of the GM heads) and was very pleased witht he improvement. I ran a best of 12.39 @ 111 with the ported stockers (with bigger valves and they flowed in the 255 to 260 range) . With no other cahnges but bolting on an out of the box set of 190cc AFRs I ran a 12.22 in warmer weather !!! I was impressed, when this motors bottom end goes and I build a stroker I plan on porting these heads .
Not sure how far along you are...but you mentioned you had flat tops...did you bother to figure out what your compression ratio is going to be
If you're running flat tops you will probably need a larger head cc...

btw, your engine is badass..........how much did the engine itself cost?
why did you choose to run the DFI?
Just an FYI a car in not an investment. You will never make back nearly the $$$ that U put into it. So with that being said unless you are planning to run street races for $$$ your best bet is the Stock one's. There's enough power there and it won't cost you a arm and a leg.
