so:

when im going 55 mph, and im fifth and the car is reading 2000 rpms, and there is almost no load on the motor... this is good?

compared to

when im going 55 mph, and im in sixth and the car is at 1400-1500 rpms and the motor feels a bit overwhelmed, this is bad?

Not to mention that with a higher vacuum, the fuel pressure regulator makes the fp lower automatically. And at WOT when there is less vac, the fp is at its highest not to mention that the PE fueling tables are adding even more fuel

I'd be estatic if mine just got an average of 20mpg but my driving style would never allow that

I never did mileage comparisons when I had a vac gauge on v6 car. This is what I noticed though.

Cruising in 4th at 50mph, at 2000rpm, I was pulling 16" of vac, and the car idled at 17". A 10% increase in throttle got me to 13" and I got noticeagle acceleration.

Cruising in 5th gear at 50mph, at 1500rpm, I was pulling 15" of vac, and a 10% increase in throttle got me to about 9" without noticeable acceleration.

higher vacuum means better mileage. 0 vacuum means you are at or close to wide open throttle.

high vacuum means your throttle blades are almost totally closed.

I forgot to mention...my change in driving style to increase mileage consists of running stop signs and red lights and trying to never hit my brake Works pretty good....now if everyone else would at least learn not to prematurely brake all the time and get off their cell phones

Yeah not so sure the running of the stop signs is the safest or most intelligent idea... but then again, you'll get really good mileage when you're dead.

IT's been a while, but I've got some updates.

I installed GTS headlight covers for less drag(and because they look cool), some ASP underdrive pulleys, and a gizmo similar to a MAFT+ that lets me lean out my o2 sensors during closed loop. I also installed a vac gauge and a PLX wideband o2 sensor with gauge.

My previous best with windows up was 31.5mpg, and 30.9mpg as a backup test. My previous best windows down is 28.8mpg.

WIth the headlight covers, underdrive pulleys, and slightly leaned out o2's, I just pulled off 32.9mpg with the windows down. I can't do a windows up test because it's hot as hell in the south and my AC doesn't work. Once it's fixed, I imagine the UDP's will help out alot.

According to my wideband, the car used to cruise at 14.7-15.3AFR. I now have it set to cruise at 15.3-15.7 AFR. I dont' know if it's safe for the motor to cruise any leaner than that, so I'll probably leave it alone for a while.

EDIT: The car idles at 22" vac, and I try to accelerate between 10"-15". During cruise on level ground at 70mph, it will pull around 17". In these southern rolling hills, I cruise at 15"-20".

that's very nice for a V8!

I've found that the biggest thing that I can do improve my fuel economy is to just drive slower. The other night I was driving my truck home on the highway and at the end of my trip the Average Fuel Economy reading was 25.7MPG. I drove like a 90 year old granny, but it paid off.
