1993 Z28 Modifications: How To
I noticed that most performance intake kits as well as other performance parts for the 4th generation LT1 fbodies are listed as 1994-1997 compatable. Why not 93? Is it because of the Speed Density system and the non-programmable chip in the 1993 cars? I guess you would have to buy the chip for the 1993 cars. I could customize my old 1995 Z28 with little effort with the use of a custom cable and my laptop. What are the recommended basic modifications for the 1993 LT1 engine, exhaust, and intake? My guess is that I will have to get a new chip at the same time the upgrades are performed to the intake and exhaust. This car is an Automatic (my old 95 Z28 was a 6 speed), but I noticed it does not have the electronic transmission that is used in the 1994-1997 models. Does this mean shift-kits and shift point customizing are out of the question?
go to speeddensity.org
specializes in 1993 f-body's.
anyways, cold air kits will work with a little work on 93's, the problem is they dont have the MAF on the intake, which means the cold air kits are gonna be about on inch short of reaching. Its better to find one marked for a 93 then to try and make a 94+ fit.
The chip in the 1993 is programmable, but you have to have a chip burner and physically burn a new chip for it. More info at that site I listed.
transmission......shift kits should work......I think.
shift points will be set by how the 700r4 is setup, you have to change some weights internal to the tranny, iirc -not as easy as with the 4L60E
I'd get Longtubes, nice catback or dual exhaust, stall, and a cold air intake for starters....that should wake the car up and make it sound nice.

There are plenty of parts out there and for sale even used for '93's. I'm building the one in my sig on the cheap as just my daily driver/twice a month bracket car. Moroso makes a really nice one, always preferred it to the K&N, and it's long enough to mate up perfect for a stock or aftermarket intake elbow. With literally just the mods in sig, run those numbers reliably, and likely with a small ignition-related problem. Good luck.
The main reason you aren't finding a aftermarket 93' manifold is the 93's used a different fuel rail setup than the 94-97's. The latter manifolds had a crossover cutout at the front of the intake to link the fuel rail together. Not to many aftermarket co's want to mass produce an expensive part like the intake mani if it's only made for a single year model. I think the others will fit your 93 you just will have a channel in the front for the fuel rail you won't use, but I'm not 100% on that.
There's no difference in short blocks, from year to year. You can bolt whatever accessories you want on it. You can run the vented Opti if you use the correct cam, timing set and timing cover (93 and 94 both use the unvented Opti, so you need 95-97 parts). There is no difference in the water pump drive gear from year to year. You can only add an MAF sensor if you run the engine with a 94-97 PCM.
