New Optima battery but bad starter HELP !

Ok before I put in a brand new red top battery my 97 for the past year had problems starting.. it wouldn't stall but it woudlnt start up like a brand new car does . " easy way to explain the starting "

So i put in a new opti battery and yesturday it started up then i turned it off.... and went to start it again, it would not crank it just made a THUNK SOUND that was all... I tried a few hours later same thing I was like wtf... Im not a mechanic and only know so much about cars. I checked the wires up top everything was connected.

So i went out to my car this morning and it started up.... I drove it to my friends work and it died " he knows ALOT about LT1, hes built them and so forth from scratch.

When he went to turn it on it started to smoke a little bit on passenger side header below engine. He believes ITS THE STARTER......

3 Hours later today it started up not easy but started i drove it home and its dead again. so the question is DO YOU THINK ITS THE STARTER ?

sounds similar to when my starter went out. if it is the starter its not that big of a deal..EASY FIX autozone has a remaned starter for cheap and you get like 40 off for your old starter....and its very easy to swap out yourself. Oh yah look at different year starters 93-97 will all work on the LT1 but the 96 is the best deal, yes they are different prices significantly in some cases

take your starter out then take it to autozone...itll be 100 even...also like i said check the 96' model i think that was the best deal...again they all bolt up..and the 96' is the LT4 design...as stupid as it may seem it sounds cool starting it lol....starts faster too

odd i just looked at autozone and its 149 with a 32 core charge......and they are only showin 1 style starter...i just replaced mine a couple months ago...anyway...do a search on the boards about starters and go with a LT4 style...it starts a lot easier and faster

yep.

Depending on whats wrong with it, you can have it rebuilt, but for peace of mind, you might as well go ahead and buy the reman.

you have put an opti in? shoot me some pointer if you would before i tackle the project. im hoping to have it done by wednesday before work. mine is not working and i ordered the one from summit for 260 and it comes in today and i want to start on it Wednesday. in addition, theres got to be a way for these opti to stop breaking like they are now. its the heat from the engine thats killing them isnt it?

Its a pain to install....
You need to remove raidiator/watermpump/fans/harmonic balancer pulley....
then you should be able to get to it pretty easliy... def a pain though...
