Would a bad MAF give me a hard start and when started will it make the car shut off immediately? When warm, it idles with a little miss.

 

It could cause hard start, or start and then immediate dying. Or a miss under load.

Normally something like that is caused by a leak in the intake tract someplace after the MAF (elbow, rubber coupling etc). Make sure its all sealed up and tight (double check the elbow under the throttle body)

 

I noticed a small tear on my elbow before it enters the throttle body. Could this small tear make a HUGE impact or just a noticeable difference? Also, does this stalling rule out the possibility of a bad IAC? Any comments will be helpful.

A small tear can have some pretty serious effects. Really need to get that fixed. Those elbows are pretty expensive though, just a heads up. May want to try the for sale section or ordering from jason or dal (do a search for their names for contact info).

You could also try to ghetto rig it with some duct tape/RTV and see how it runs then. I wouldnt leave it like that but it will help you diagnose.

The IAC is next to impossible to diagnose without a scantool of somesort. With a leaking intake tract its not even really doing its job as it should be and readings will be skewed

I got answers like fuel pressure regulator could be bad, fuel pump and vacum leaks. I feel confident with your answer because its straight forward with no hesitation. Thanks again!

 

Is that you Z on atljar.com? I have a 96 Z m6 red in color with the black racing stripes all the way through. I want to get that RS ground effect with the new c5 corvette rims (chrome). I'm sure that would look sweet. Do you know of a place were I can get a set of cheap ground effects?

 

the vacuum leak people are on the right track i think. Once again i think i would try to temporarily fix the elbow before buying a new one to see what the difference is. Never hurts to be sure.

Yup thats my Z. I honestly havent looked for ground effects in a long time. I know t byrne (sponsor here) does group purchases fairly often for wings west, which makes most of the ground effects kits out there. I would keep an eye out in the board sponsors section, or maybe ask a sponsor to do a GP.

Unplug your MAF and see if the problem resides.. Unplugging the MAF will set the car to speed density mode where the MAF is not used and will be a good test to see if the MAF and tear is the problem. How are your plug wires? I just bought another z28 and the huge problem the kid claimed it had ended up being a burnt plug wire. You can check for a burnt/grounded wire by starting the car for a minute, shut it off lick your finger and feel each of manifold ports for coldness. Those are what I would check first. Then maybe look at the ICM those can overhead and cause the car to die. And then if none of that helps I would pull the opticrap and see if its all corroded. If all that fails set it on fire and with the insurance money buy another one

j/k people are actually doing that to beater cars in Phoenix to get insurance money!
