Most engine upgrades involve getting what you have rebuilt, but there are plenty of vendors who can supply a built motor to "swap" in if that is what you mean. Or do you mean a different type of motor like a Generation I small block (the LT1 being considered a Gen II) or an LS based engine. People have also put big block Chevy's into 4th gens. If you want to use the existing engine computer to run the fuel and ignition, you will need to stick with an LTx (Gen II) motor. Most swaps to different types are carb/distributor setups. Or an aftermarket engine management system can be used if you wish to retain fuel injection. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination, abilities, and the thickness of your wallet.
One thing that often seems to be under emphasized - unless you are talking power adder (nitrous or a supercharger) the top end of the motor is where to concentrate if you want to make hp. The heads, cam, valvetrain, etc. are were the gains are to be had.

Most people underestimate the cost of a power adder build up because they don't adequately consider the supporting systems needed to make big hp. The transmission, drive shaft, rear end, fuel system, brakes, wheels and tires, etc. will need to be upgraded for a hi-po buildup. I suggest a more modest start.

Start with the basics.
What do you want to do with the car:
-street power for fun
-street power for racing (not recommended)
-street & strip power (once in a while at the track)
-strip only power
-auto-X only power
If its a strip car, what are your ET goals?
No one can tell you what you have to do to the tranny, until you tell us what your goals are with the engine. At this point, all we know is you want a stroker of some sort, probably with a turbo. Because of the turbo requirement, you might want to pursue the question on the "Forced Induction" forum.
You can bolt an STS turbo on a stock engine..... or you could build a killer turbo with more than 1,000+HP. You have to tell us what your goal is, and how much you can spend on the engine.
