Internal or External Fuel Pump ?

Going to change my stock Fuel Pump and I have some questions please:

I did search for the subject and I already found great info however I am still wondering whether to go internal or external. In addition, what is the best Fuel Pump out there in the market? I am looking for something with long life since I find it very difficult for me to uninstall the exhaust and the tank everytime, and I do not wish to do any cutting to pull the pump from the trunk side of my SS.

Do you really think I need a very high performance pump with the following mods? Would it make any difference ?

My Car is 97 SS with 4.5 Powerdyne Supercharger.
Borla Exhaust, y pipe and headers.
Rear Gears, TransGo and hypertech Programmer.
MSD Ignition and some useless small mods

Thanks

You must have a working internal pump, whether or not you also have an external booster pump, if that helps any.

Re: Internal or External Fuel Pump ?

I'm no expert but Ive had some time with blowers. I would say get the racetronix kit and some good injectors 42#'s mabey and eliminate the FMU if you have it all together. My first supercharged setup was a S-trim on a mustang with a FMU and external T-rex fuel pump and stock injectors. I later upgraded to a 255 walboro and 42# injectors then deleted the FMU but kept the external T-rex fuel pump. I used that setup all the way up to 15lbs of boost. Then I went to a T-trim blower and installed a KB Boost-a-pump then deleted the T-Rex external pump. That setup handled 500rwhp+ pretty well. I know it's a different car but Im sure the principles are somewhat the same but like I said before, with a Powerdyne I'm sure a 255 walbaro and mabey some slightly larger injectors will withstand the max boost that blower is rated for. Also IMHO I wouldnt trust a Hypertech tune with a blower car. Sorry for the long winded response.

Besides removing the exhaust, you need remove the rear axle too to allow clearance for the tank to drop.

Re: Internal or External Fuel Pump ?

The Aeromotive unit I use (externally only) said it should only be bottom fed from the tank and as close as possible. I'm sure some use them as top feed but there is probably a reason they suggest bottom feed. I didn't know that until I got the pump. So my original plan for using the top feed had to change so the tank had to sumped. Obviously if you used it as a booster pump as Shoe suggested, you wouldn't have to change the tank. Not a giant PITA but just something else to think about.

Re: Internal or External Fuel Pump ?

A single 255lph intank will support at least 700rwhp. The Bosch is more $$$ than the Walbro, but both are good. For no reason other than previous success with it, I'd do the Bosch. External pumps are often quite noisy, FWIW.

Re: Internal or External Fuel Pump ?

I have a 205LPH Bosch in the stock in-tank position, and another identical one off a sump at the bottom/back of the tank. Neither of them is very noisy. The outboard tank started life 10 years ago as the inline booster included with the NOS 5176 dry kit, and its still going strong. The Bosch pumps are pretty much indestructable.

Re: Internal or External Fuel Pump ?

Can you develop a fuel system that will handle upwards of 600 or more RWHP with the stock in tank, and an in-line external booster pump? I plan to spray on my stock shortblock, only a 100 shot for now, until I have to money to build a low comp 383 procharged motor, likely also with a small shot of n20 so I dont have to run as high of a boost all the time.

Im realistically shooting to make somewhere in power along the lines of what you have Rich. I looked at the 255's but then I started thinking about just using a booster pump in addition to the stock in tank pump? And pros or cons to either of setup? HP limits?
