Re: intake manifold..

Removing and installing the intake is covered in my cam removal and install guides on my Tech Page. What new one are you looking to put on? There aren't that many to choose from and only necessary if you have serious internal engine mods.

Re: intake manifold..

It is a pretty easy thing to do. I got my instructions from projecttransam.com you can go to the install links on the left side and find a few different versions.

Re: intake manifold..

A LT4 intake won't work with LT1 heads.
You are better off getting your stock heads ported and your stock intake to match.

Re: intake manifold..

its very easy, just the back bolts can be a pain. dependant on your tool inventory, and if you have the skills to take those pesky fuel lines off i removed the drivers side valve cover and it made life a lot easier, but for me it had to come off anyways. and remember, the 4 bolts on the top...those are for the fuel rail, not the intake...so if you just wanna get the intake off, take those 4 out, yank the fuel rail and the injector plugs off then take the intake bolts out and dont forget the stuff BEHIND the intake too. and when putting it back on, make sure you have your bolts organized to go back in the same spots, and in the proper tightnening order, and the right TQage as well.

Re: intake manifold..

I'm not positive but from reading other threads I've heard the LT4 intake won't work with stock heads unless it is modified a bit.

Maybe somebody else will chime in that knows for sure.

Re: intake manifold..

Possibly, the manifold may have been clearanced to work with the LT1 stock heads. IMO, you are wasting your money and won't see any real gain. Unless you have some heads and other mods that will compliment the manifold, there is not much point in putting one on. There have been lots of threads of this nature.

The problem is not if the heads are ported or polished, it is that there is physical difference to the mating of the intake at the head. Either the head or the intake must be machined to allow you to bolt them together.

If you look at the first set of A and B comparison photos on this page, you will see what I mean. The LT4 head has a taller mating flange area to accomodate the LT4 manifold.
You can see a cross section of how the manifold mates to the head in the top photo.

Re: intake manifold..

When it left the factory, the LT4 intake manifold had ports that were virtually identical to the "late" LT1 intake manifold ports. In other words, the manifold was no different than an LT1, except it had more metal above the intake runners, so that the ports could be opened up to match the taller ports on the LT4 heads. That extra metal causes the upper edges of the LT4 intake to interfere with the valve cover support rail on the LT1 heads. Some machine work is required.

So far.... a waste of time to change it.

But, if the guy you were buying it from had it worked to support a decent LT4 head, the intake manfiold ports will have been "raised", because a stock LT4 intake will not do a good job of supporting ported LT4 heads (probably isn't all that great on stock LT4 heads). Now, if he had the ports extended at the top, when you bolt it on your LT1 heads, there's going to be at least an 0.100" lip where the intake manifold port is taller than the head port. Not a good flow configuration. Or, maybe your ported heads will produce less of a gap, but its unlikely they would have been opened up as tall as an LT4 head could be opened up.

Net-net.... unless you are sure you have a decent match between your LT1 heads and the LT4 intake, why are you swapping?
