If those ricers are just so damn reliable, then how come when I go to the track to race, I'll watch a ricer take one run and blow every single fluid right out of his car, and he has to retire? I'll watch camaros and firebirds with Lt1's and Ls1's make run after run with no problems. See, once those japanese cars actually get some power under the hood they don't last for sh*t. I don't see where you people are coming from saying that they are more reliable, because basically, they just aren't

One of the reasons why so many people think Japanese cars are more reliable is that they may not squeak or rattle quite as much when they get old. Alot of GM cars were like this in the 80's and early 90's but they also lasted and under alot of abuse in some cases. Sure they may have had more sensors and other minute details go out before a Toyota Camry, but the big stuff such as the driveline, suspension, etc were good. Car and Driver, in a long term 40,000 test of a 95 Blazer even admitted that despite the sqeaks and rattles emitted by this Blazer, it never once left them stranded and was one of the cheapest vehicles ever for them maintain and fix problems.

There is definitely merit in that once Japanese cars make power, they will break. I've heard of Integras, with their all forged rotating assemblies can't handle any more than a 75hp shot of nos without blowing up. You might say that those honda civics and other 4cyls and such werent designed for performance and therefore not as reliable but that too has no merit. The fact that there are so many sb's and bb's running around with stock bottom ends making 400+ hp and being about as reliable as they were stock more than emphasizes that point. I could take a late 70's or even a TBI truck motor with smog heads and cam, and build it to have 400 reliable hp with stock bottom end for dirt cheap compared to the costs of building any Japanese normally aspirated motor, 4cyl or 6cyl.

My z has 137k miles on it and im doing heads cam etc to it now, only thing replaced has been the fuel filter, waterpump (136k miles it alsted),and swapping out the clutch now after 137k miles it is starting to slip. brake pads have been replaced at 110k
and got 25.6 mpg running 80mph

you say american pushrod motors dont last? got a 91 chevy truck with 260ishk miles on the motor waterpump went on that and starter and thermostat, 88 in the yard w/ 233k on it replaced trannys twice and a rearend and waterpump, friends 89 has 302k miles on it unsure what has been replaced he has 95 chevy truck in the yard with 336k miles on it.

Id say they will last if you keep them maintained
cant ride 50k miles w/o chaning oil

For those that say Japanese cars last longer, how many of them have made it to 500k and beyond? Every example of a 500k plus car I know of has been either a GM 350, an old Chrysler slant 6, a VW or Mercedes diesel or a Volvo. I can't recall any Japanese engines in there.

Oh you can't forget the Chevy I6's/Stovebolt engines of yore as well as Ford's "big six" that was made up until the redesign of the F150 . And just think back when the I6's were designed and made, the oil wasn't NEARLY as good as it is now. I'd like to see someone take a brand new one of those, break it in right, and then use nothing but Redline or Mobil 1 oil. Who knows when one of those motors would fail under those conditions.

I had a Buick GN that had about 250K on the od before it was stolen and it ran great. Never anything major just water pump, alt, etc. Not even the turbo.

I've seen many toyotas, hondas & mazdas stuggle to 100K with blue smoke out the pipe. I've seen nissans do better as my Altima has 130k and no smoke, rattle or slight shake. Just smooth and peppy 5spd. But I take good care of her I change the oil regularly, etc.

My Z smooth as well but has only 90k. These cars can take the HP. 4 Bangers tend not to hold up when you mod them.

Ah yes, Ford's 4.9 liter straight six was a good engine too. I also forgot to mention GM's 3.8, that sucker is pretty bulletproof too.

a Few hundred miles away from 130,000. Aside from the norm that you have to change every once in a while, fuel filter, freakin opti or Distributor cap, etc. I have had no major problems. But little by little I have been adding things that not only boost performance but and/change things that may not need to be changed with something better to prevent anything wrong down the road. Runs great though!!
