Hand held scan tool for 1994 Z28

I have an old laptop that I used years ago to get codes on my 94z and would like a different scan tool I can use that's easier. I think its OBD1 with a OBD2 style connector. What exactly do I need to get? I've heard if you go to places like NAPA there scan tools rarely works because of the weird style this year uses.

94s were OBD-I with the old 12 pin DLC, so any OBD-I scanner should work. Though, if you have any more modern cars, I would consider getting a scanner that could do OBD-I and II (like an Actron 9690). Or you can search for an older Actron (like 9145 that does both).

Not so old related thread. Note in particular post #9 indicating avoidance of Innova and Equus brands.

Ebay has them for around $250.00. I'm bidding on one that ends in 6 days. I see Bosch has one also. Anyone have any problems with that brand?

That's a good price. I will probably go that route. Thanks

NO F-Body LT1’s have OBD-1.5. Only the Corvette LT1 used the so-called OBD-1.5 system, which produces diagnostic codes in both the 2-digit OBD-1 format, and the 4-digit Pxxxx OBD-2 format. There never was an “official” (EPA directed) OBD-1.5 system. That was just a name GM made up for it. 94 and 95 LT1 F-Body’s use the IDENTICAL OBD-1 PCM.

If you are calling the setup used in the 95 F-Body’s OBD-1.5, that is not correct. It's just a mismatch of the 16-pin OBD-2 style DLC with a true OBD-1 PCM. Shoebox and I have never found a 94 with a 16-pin DLC. My 94 Formula was a very late (August 94) production, and had a 12-pin connector.
