Your 96 has a vented. Non-vented was 92 (vette), 93, and 94. Along with being less expensive, the vented opti doesnt trap moisture (like the non vented optis do) and theoretically prolongs opti life. There's also differences with the timing cover and timing gears, as well as a couple of other things.

There is already a company that makes a billet replacement opti, but it is $600. They are thinking of discontinuing it because they aren't selling well at that price. http://www.dynotech-eng.com/dynaspark.htm

That is not true, there is a 12 month warranty on the OEM GM Optispark that you buy from a dealer (Jason Cromer, etc..). I know at least one person from the board had a new one shipped for free from one of those guys (Jason Cromer, Sam Smith ...) after it failed within a year.

600 bucks i see why...im sure if msd made one, they could probly do it for 200 bucks...make it tally sealed.so even when a water pump failed it wouldnt take the opti with it

i seen that sh*t in a gm high tech performance issue.. the dude had a rear mounted dist in his lt1 but it looked like he had to chop the sh*t outa the panel that sits above the intake just so it would all clear! there just isnt much room back there!

i know MSD could come up with somethin

ohhhh..i didnt mention this is in a 91 GTA...i have plenty of room back there ...i wouldnt know anything about having to hack it up to fit..the 3rd gens had the room...
i have a carb setup on mine now, but i will go back to FI this winter...i havent decided if i want to use a LT1 Pcm for the reason of the optispark...i have many horror stories that id rather avoid..
i can use my batch fire ECM and splice the LT1 stuff into it and run it off a rear distributor..but id rather take advantage of sequential fire...

If MSD would make an optispark for LT1 motors theyd sell like hotcakes!..i bet they wouldnt be able to make them fast enough
whats the alternative?...buy an autozone special?..it may last it probly wont..or you could spend 600 bucks on one...its obvioulsy overpriced or theyd sell more...MSD could sell a completly sealed one for even 300 bucks and i bet people would line up!

Like I said, my current autozone remanufactured opti has lasted 4 years without a problem and still running strong. At only the price of a few gaskets and an hour or 2 of my own labor, Id be willing to change it out every year if necessary. Or you can spend 2 to 3 times as much on a new unit, get no warranty, and take your chances. Going by word of mouth regarding these optis, the new units seem to fail just about as often and the re-mans. I've even heard of instances were new GM replacements have failed.

IMO, the autozone re-mans are a good deal. Especially if you can now get the complete unit for $130 with cap and rotor...
My brand new AC Delco Opti went out at 11,900 miles barely under warranty. (They have 12,000 mile warranty IF installed by GM) For what its worth, its a crap shoot either way.

Numerous people have gotten warranty replacements for GM parts (including optis) that were installed themselves and not by a dealer.

My transmission strait from gm 3 year 50k mile warrenty, warrenty only void if tranny put in wrong, does not matter at all who puts it in, they have a good warrenty policy.

Well I stand corrected. My main point anyway is that my POS opti went in under 12K miles. Thank god it was free.
