A dyno is nothing more that a tuning too.

E.T.'s tell some, but not all as there's simple things that can cause huge variables.

Trap speeds are pretty tell-tale as long as it's a clean run.

Its the converter....they throw off numbers according to the guy at our local dyno. I had a run that was about 255 hp/280 tq and (a while later) after my ignition, beefed tranny, and 2800 stall cheap-o converter it was 244 hp/ 259 tq. ...but the Max Torque number noted on the graph is 329! These are all SAE numbers. On the second run the uncorrected numbers were ONLY 218 hp/ 231 tq! Is there any mathematical formula to account for a converter? I don't even know how I could tell the converter was locked up or not either.

Can't the cam, converter, and gears all be matched somehow (number-wise)? And if they aren't they can throw things off? I swear I heard something about that somewhere.

I was kind of wondering about the converter also. I don't blame the Dyno or any of the operators. From the graphs they had on the first two runs it looked like the converter wasn't even locking up untill about 4500RPM. I know its something to do with my car because other cars, 6-speed ones for example were dynoing good numbers. I guess I didn't realize that a high stall converter could make that big of a difference once they lock.

Now I dont feel so bad about my numbers from yesterday. I did 279 rwhp and was really disappointed, and I have a set up very similar to yours. I also noticed how much more power the M6's were showing, that one hotcammed and stock-headed car put down 337

1996GTP, What do you run in the 1320? What do you have for a stall?

I havent made it to a track yet, because the car has really only been together for a few months. Its a re-stalled stock converter, supposed to be around 2400 I think, but my dyno pull didnt really start until about 3200...

you must understand there are good dynos and there are bad dynos. i read a magazine where they took all known dynos which was like 5 or 6 and they compared them with a stock mustang GT, and the numbers were staggering.

some machines were even 50hp less than the higher end dynos. just because you went and had three pulls done for $30 shouldnt dissapoint you if you like your track times. those are awesome track times, so i would say screw the dyno and go to another place next time and make sure its a different dyno. if you have to shell out more money to make it more accurate, then so be it.

Dyno's are good for measuring gains and tuning. Measuring gains is only effective if you use the same dyno.
