deltec?

I just bought a 97 trans am and the guy said he converted it to coil packs similar to the LS1. He said it was called deltec. Does this sound right? When i get on it at 4 and a half or 5k rpms it starts studdering. What could cause this. Thanks.

Re: deltec?

If it's a Delteq the coils are either mounted on the drivers side valve cover or on the radiator under the fans. If it has 4 coils mounted to each valve cover it has an LTCC system.

The shuddering or miss you describe is simular to a miss I've had with my Delteq system. The wires they supply with the system are junk. Replace the wires and plugs and you should be OK.

Re: deltec?

I had a similar situation where one of the coils went bad. The engines idling had shaken one of the coils mounting screws loose (valve cover mount) and that specific coil had a noticeable rattle when shaken off of the car when compared to the other three. Mine sees 7000rpm fairly often and the Delteq has worked great for me.

Re: deltec?

The Delteq is derived from the Northstar engine, so its not like the LS1. It uses the 4-coil pack in "waste spark" mode.

Re: deltec?

Alright, thanks for the help. It does have delteq and its mounted down in front of the engine. This is pretty overwhelming going from a carburated 350 to an LT1. Im going to go get a service manual and some new wires and plugs. Where can i get wires for it?

Re: deltec?

Those are going to be custom cut to length wires. You just need standard 90* boots on each end. Just pick up any cut to length wire kit and it should work just fine.

Re: deltec?

Try and wiggle the coil packs. I had a loose one causing problems and it turned out to be the mounting plate's bolt threads were weak. Deltec sent a new plate with reinforced threads. Also, put some dielectric grease on the prongs that insert into the coil packs and on your plug wires at the coil packs.

Your 4K RPM problem could be other than coil related. Sometimes it is knock retard and other times it is the MAF exceeding limits. Your mods may point you to your problem.

If the cigarette lighter does not work the port that your scanner plugs into will not be powered. Check the fuse to the cigarette lighter as it is on the same circuit as the diagnostic port.
