Re: Comp R's

I'll throw in my $0.02. Spun a few bearings and while tearing it down, found one missing clip and one bent clip on my Comp Rs (the later thin clip design). I had preload adjusted to the Comp recommended value (I was told 0.002-0.004" preload warm; converted it to an angle based on thread size & used a protractor). I'm not going to say that it was or wasn't the fault of the lifters, just what I found.

The bent clip was "buckled" upward the same amount on opposing sides of the clip. If the cup contacted the clip I wouldn't expect it to fail like this since it should more or less contact evenly around the clip (which I don't think would cause the bending that I see), or it could shear the clip. If a pushrod contacted it, I also wouldn't expect this type of even bending.

I have buckled in quotes because that implies it was loaded in the plane of the clip and was displaced out of plane, which is what it looks like. But it really can't be loaded that way unless it was thermal growth. These clips are a full circle and don't have a break like the c-clips. If the c-clip wants to grow it has room to move. The new ones don't.

It's just a thought. I have no idea how much heat these things see or how much they want to grow relative to the lifter body. Maybe I've spent too much time at work analyzing stuff to see if it will break!

Re: Comp R's

Are the Comp "R"s the same as the "Pro Magnum"? I know they are both considered the upgrade lifters for an LT1, but I don't remember if they are different names for the same product.

Thanks

Yes, they're the same lifters.

Re: Comp R's

The Tech at Comp Cam says the R-lifter should be used if your wanting to turn 6.5-7K RPM. These should be set with 0 lash and so require adjustment every 1-2K miles. If you don't readjust them you wind up with slop and the lifters push or pop up into the clip, since the push rod has no pressure anymore to hold it down. at this point is were the clips break. So all you have to do is maintenence and it's all cool.

The pressure created from the LASH. WIthout it, when the valves close the inner part of the lifter reaches the clip, since the push rod is now not pushing(no lash),with force and can crack it.

Re: Comp R's

Setting hydrolic lifters to zero lash is just down right retarded.
Every single one of those Comp help desk dolts have their own opinion as to how their parts should be installed. I swear their only qualifications is that they've watched Romper Room at least twice...

Re: Comp R's

I pulled my comp Rs out last night for some stockers. The clips all had small divots in them from the pushrod hitting. Luckily there was none lost. The car runs extremely well with the stock lifters. More power down low, smoother up top... screw comp r.

Re: Comp R's

man maybe this is my problem, I put in new comp r's.. last month when I had my h/c install... now car did not gain any power... doing some surging, but maybe not the problem, just doesn't feel strong like it should...I took off the intake to put on new gasket... and saw atleast 3 of the lifters on the driverside alone had bent divots, but didn't see any missing clips..just looked pushed in the clips did, could this be a power problem, and should I take them out before they break...I guess I can go back to stock. where is the cheapest place to buy them? and what is the easiest way to replace the lifters...thanks..

Re: Comp R's

Get those comp r's out of there stat!!! I HAD the same problems you described. I bought a set of used stockers and cleaned them out nice and good and dropped them back in. Felt like I was squeezing an extra hundred shot plus the power came on fast, strong, and stayed that way all the way to the top.
Oh and my car surged like a SOB too with the comp r's. It was very annoying...
