Not only no, but HELL no. The only purpose that clip has is to keep the plunger in place before the lifter has been adjusted. If the clip breaks there should still be ample pressure via load on pushrod on the plunger unless the valvetrain is unhealthy or maladjusted.

Just thought I would add that appearantly it's not only the Comp R lifters that are having this problem. I have a set of their high energy Tall lifters and I just found the #1 intake lifter cup and a steel disc laying next to the #1 exhaust lifter. The only saving grace is it appearantly came out while I was working on the rockers for that cylinder and I don't believe any other pieces went anywhere. Pretty cruddy quality control. Anyone have any luck getting replacements or refunds from Comp?

Any other tall lifters I could get to work with my small base cam?

I had the high energy ones as well and two failed. I went back with the stock lifters on my comp 306. When I change cams later this summer I will switch to something else.

I'm not say anyone should go out and buy the newer style Comp Rs, but when mine were yanked a few months back all were fine. And believe me when I tell you they were not set right in the begining (loose) and how noisy they were. The shop I took it to (which couldn't believe I drove it like that) had no problem setting them to zero lash and they worked great for almost 1k. We did pull them just to be safe (you guys were scaring me) when the car went into the shop for a set of beehives. Also found the stock pushrod lenght was off a little and had a set of 7.150s put in. By the way, the beehives gave the motor another 400 to 500 rpm. It still peaks at 5900 to 6000, but now barely looses any HP after 6k and the 1/2 shift is now set at 6400. The rpms use to nose dive right after 6k. Nice improvement don't you think?

Thanks for the heads-up. Yet another reason to NOT BUY from Comp Cams. They basically accused me of installing their camshaft wrong. I put my original cam in and the car fired right up.

Their techs are stupid and their products are junk. Crane Cams all the way!

Now I'm REALLY anxious to get these things out and see what's going on with them.

well, always the same
In fact I haven't realized that something is wrong. My engine just started to "consume" an oil in great amounts, so I've decided to disassembly. The rings gaps were way to much (I think an assembler mistake) and in oil pan I found these pieces of ****. The engine has around 7k miles with these lifters and preload was set (twice) on 1/16 of turn. In the mean time there were guideplate issues - sides of almost all guideplates were heavily worn. I exchanged guideplates, but they are worn again (a little less).

None of that sounds like the fault of the lifters. Reads like a bad build with horrible valvetrain geometry.
