Re: 7'11" ceiling in garage lt1 removal(bottom)

Pulled off my balancer off the motor to get to my underdrive pulley, an aeromotive part. Its stuck on that crank hub like its welded on. Can't get it off. The pulley puller i used started to dig into the underdrive pulley itself......any suggestions anyone? The thing has been on there since 1999

Re: 7'11" ceiling in garage lt1 removal(bottom)

Just had a chance to get back to working on this thing. Had to use a 7ton pulley puller. It got it off in a few turns. That let me pull and transfer my opt. Now debating if im gonna put the underdrive pulley onto the newer motor?

Gonna do the oil pan gasket next. I have two dented oil pans. Planning on using the least dented one. Is it ok to lightly tap out minor dents with a rubber mallet? No creases on either pan, just minor indentations

Sure, you won't weaken anything by banging out the dents.

What did you use the puller on? If it was the ****** the balancer of the hub you had way more puller than you needed

Just an FYI, you don't need to remove the crank hub to change the OPTI...you just have to turn the crank to get the clearance...

The balancer came off by hand after alittle penetrating fluid. The massive pulled was for the underdrive pulley underneath. It just wouldn't budge with the smaller pulley puller.

I knew about the opti and hub thing, thanks anyway though. I appreciate all the hints.

Just gunna throw this out there but if you ever want a aftermarket pan I would consider it now. I held off on mine as seen the price of the canton pan and that some people have trouble sealing them up. I was advised to remove the windage tray out of my stock pan and run that so my larger stroke would clear. I am repulling my motor to fix leaking head studs and change a couple things so started looking at pan options and there are reasonable priced pans that others speak highly of. I got a champ pan with pickup shipped for 225 and the pickup actually has a bolt to prevent it from falling off as ive heard of pickup coming off the pump. If your motors out and ur budget allows you wont find a better time for a new pan. Your setup and driving may not require an upgrade but now is the best time to consider it

I was thinking about that with great thought, but it just ain't in the cards right now. I just had a baby last Friday and can't really work on the car or throw cash at it. Wish i could....

Had a few more questions for camaroz28. One of the fasteners on the factory exhaust manifolds has a bolt on support incorporated to hold the alternator? Its the front passenger side....

That does not go there. There is a two part bracket that goes from the intake manifold bolt to the alternator.

You can see part of it here....one lower left and one lower center(behind the head of the bolt).

Massive, but here....(right click and view image to full size it)

It's not full size in IE...here is the direct link.

I'm pretty sure it didn't come from the factory like that. Somebody screwed up putting the alternator on it at some point. If you need a direct overhead shot, I can get one for you. Just let me know.

Huh, your probably right, but im the only owner of the car. Wonder what happened? Either way, im gonna put it back together the same way its always been since new. I just have to remember what actually was bolted to it, lol. I have to go back and look at the pics of when i took the motor out.

Ill post it when i figure it out with a pic

Here is the overhead view of it from my Z28.

The piece in your picture, appears to be the bracket to the back of the alternator. You just need to find the other piece of it. I think those two are tacked together at the intake manifold...so someone broke yours apart. I could be wrong though.....but I seem to remember when I moved one part if it, they moved together.....

Ah, here we go....internets to the rescue for me.

Re: 7'11" ceiling in garage lt1 removal(bottom)

I think what you showed in your pic of exhaust manifold is 1/2 the alternator bracket. It's been broke apart. Look at post number 28 from me....shows the bracket and mounting position well.

Edit, on second thought....just looking at the bend angles of that bracket....they don't match up to fit right vs looking at the original bracket. I'm not sure that it's 1/2 the bracket, heck.....I'm not even sure that belongs on the car.
