383 almost ready, safe to dyno?
383 almost ready, safe to dyno?
A local shop is building me a 383, should be ready in about a week. He wants to dyno test it once it's done to make sure its making the hp/tq that it should. Is it relatively safe to do this, or would I be best off waiting 500 miles or so before hitting the dyno? The motor is built strong, all forged parts and can handle 12 pounds of boost when I'm ready for it, but maybe I should wait? What do you guys think?
Re: 383 almost ready, safe to dyno?
Break it in on the dyno. I wish I were able to do mine that way. I would initially start it up, let it idle and get up to temperature, change the oil, check everything out, then flog it on the dyno.
Re: 383 almost ready, safe to dyno?
Mine ran for an hour on an engine dyno under relatively moderate loading, varying the rpm. Changed the oil and filter, checked all the bolts and started dyno tuning, ending up with several 750+HP nitrous pulls. Engine's been healthy in the 5 years since that was done.
Re: 383 almost ready, safe to dyno?
If youre worried about breakage one thing to consider is would you rather break it in a controlled enviroment or 10 miles from home?
After it has proven that the leaks and construction is sound , why not get it broke in on a dyno?
