Opti Spark - Is the Dynotech device worth the extra $$

Guys,

I am thinking it is worth the extra couple hundred dollars not only for performance but peace of mind. When buying a new stock opti spark from GM I feel you are taking your chances and I don't like the odds that I will get one that is working 100% and or will survive? Would the Dynotech unit be the best option out there?

Thanks,

I don't think the Dynotech is available any more unless some vendors have them in stock. I remember reading somewhere that they were no longer making them.

I have one. So far so good. They told me yesterday it's ok to pressure wash the engine so I will test it out soon. I'm sure theyre still makiking them. I think the product changed hands and its taking the other company forever to get everything situated.

From what Ive read it's hit or miss. Some people never have a opti problem period some do at one point. Guess it's up to you to risk it or not.

Dynatech is no longer the manufacturer of the product. The whole setup was sold to Dynaspark. There website: www.dynaspark.net

Thanks to everyone that responded. I am not going to gamble with the GM Opti Spark because it truly is a hit or miss. I would rather spend the extra $200 bucks or whatever it is for peace of mind and the reliability factor.

96SilverRam thanks for the website link!

Cheers,

I think you will be glad you spent the extra money

Here is a link with a couple of pics of my Dynatech / Billet Opti-Cover and ignition setup.

For 92-94 unvented optis, the price difference for the dynaspark is about $250, and I consider it to be a no-brainer.

For your car, the price difference is about $350, and I find it a little harder to justify since it's already vented. If I had a 95+, then I'd probably have installed a stock replacement and put some extra sealant on it.

Cheers,
Dyna makes a good unit, almost bought one 2 yrs ago after talking to one of their techs who explained how great the billet base was (I agree) but he also explained they used the same bearing, rotor & supposedly they port out the inside of the cap a little (don't remember why). They are sealed great which is the most problematic issue with stock optis being moisture, but for us high-rev types the rotor doesn't hold up and the cross-arc'ing is a problem. You could buy a dyna and add the MSD Cap & Rotor from Summit & have even a better unit.

If your dead set on keeping some type of opti wait for the MSD Pro-Billet Optispark Replacement, it has an adjustable timing on the distributer, advanced optical decoder (vs GM Mitsubishi), rugged billet body, extra cap bolt to eliminate leaks, indexed drive assembly to prevent slippage, 10,000 rpm ball bearing assembly (vs GMs) & a heavy duty cap with brass terminals. $500 bucks from Summit.

I just ordered for my new build the LTCC & MSD's new high voltage LS1 coils (vs stock ls1 coils) & 10" long MAGNECOR 10mm race wires.

Of course Delteq is another option for you.

Very Very interesting. I went to the MSD site and was reading about the MSD Pro Billet LT1 Distributor. I like how you can adjust the timing +/- 5

The pdf mentioned this "We evaluated the short comings of the OEM optical trigger and incorporated our own trigger wheel and digital encoder. This trigger process is much more reliable and accurate through high rpm."

Looks like I just might wait for this unit instead? Not sure when it will be available but I will contact MSD directly. Thanks for pointing this out to me.
