removing the screen from the maf does it help?
i removed it and cut the maf into a big hole (I tore the center section out of the 2 metal parts). Did i notice a difference? Well i really don't know... it seemed more responsive but eh who knows. But to answer ur question, i did it and driveability was not changed
I do not run anymore leaner then normal.
I run a K&N as well.

i de-screened mine on the dyno:
did 3 pulls w/ screen, then 3 pulls descreened. all 3 pulls de-screened were higher than any screened pulls.
gain from descreening: (from max screened to max de-screened) 3 RWHP
although, mine's an M6. i've heard A4's have more problems doing this than M6's. i've had no problems result from this mod.

Auto's are usually only negatively affected when the MAF is ported (results in softer shifts). Descreening will add about 2-3RWHP on the average, not much but its free, damn easy and quick to do.
GMHTP did a write up on all the basic free mods in the newest mag. They performed 5 of the most common LS1 freebies on a '99TA (TB bypass, descreened MAF, EGR mod, FRA and TB porting) and netted a gain of 10 rearwheel HP on SLP's dyno.
