I couldn't resist so I checked mine as well:
LS6

Okay, I want a least 5hp out of the deal.

What are the major differences between the two?
from pg318s previous post:
The block is a little stronger, through redesign to overcome the weakening that the larger cast-in bay-to-bay breathing windows cause. There'll be a little less windage and oil whipping at high rpm compared to the LS1 block, but that'll not be worth much in output, just hopefully we'll have less problems with oil mist getting up into the breather. Shame they didn't rationalize to the LS6 lifter valley breather at the same time.

My theory is that block explains the factory freaks out there running 12.8s, but that's just me. JaysZ, what did you run in the 1/4 stock?

JasonD is your SS an SLP SS? My car was built (7/16/02) yet it didn't get the LS6 block.

Pace motorsport sells the LS1 to LS6 conversion kit.

Hey, cool - thanks for the pics and info Jay!

According to my build sheet, the car was built:

PRODUCTN: 09/07/01

Yeah, I was kidding about the 5 extra horses. Anyway, I do wish that I did have some baseline numbers, but I have not been to the track yet (maybe March). I'll get a dyno before then. I really don't expect anything extraordinary. Your car was built in July? Mine was built in June (06/13/02). You'd think there would be a pattern somewhere.

I am willing to bet there is not a pattern. When they use up all the stock for one part, they just switch on the fly to the alternate part but only as needed. Production coordinators who monitor inventory make the call on things like this.

I may be wrong, but I used to work in an auto plant so I have a little bit of background on this. If anyone can add to this or correct me on it, please do.

Like I said, this is an interesting thread.

This was the first time I read about it. Don't get upset about me finding it interesting because I didn't notice it the previous threads about it.

He he! Mine was built I think the week after that (didn't get any build sheets, car was bought ex dealer stock in November) and I did get the LS6 block.

The conversion kit is a tempting option considering how little is really different between the LS6 and the rationalised LS1. I think the harmonic damper on the LS6 is lighter, and more attention is paid to balancing the LS6 bottom end, but that's only what I've heard through investigating this. Interesting article stolen from Vette magazine here

Frezza's block (LS1 block)

Kinda interesting.

Now the the flood of questions....

So what advatages does having the LS6 block have? None? Stronger block?

What are the major differences between the two?

I know that the 2002s have the LS6 intake, so what would it take to make my car have a true LS6 (not from the factory, obviously). Is it basically just heads and cam or is there more to it than that?
Crankshaft/piston venting is the major difference for the ls6 block. LS6 heads/cam should give you the same hp as a true LS6. I'm not sure if the exhaust manifolds are the same, I don't think so. My C5 came with the LS6 shortblack and it seems to be about two tenths quicker than the average C5, don't know why. The only thing I see an LS6sb giving is improved ring seal at high rpm.

Went and checked mine out a little while ago and it looks like I have an LS6 block as well.

Seems like quite a few '02s got the LS6 block.

Okay I have an '02 SS, for 405 horses do I really only need the ZO6 heads and cam? I already have the LS6 black, the intake manifold, I've removed my MAF screen. What are the differences between the 389 HP LS6 and the current 405 HP version. I seem to remember the MAF screen while adding a better air intake. It's in one of the Vette magazines. Anyone know?

$2,000 worth of heads and a cam seems to be a pretty good deal for 405 realiable horses.
