Factory Freak?

What exactly is the difference between a normal camaro and a factory freak? I have a 2002 A4 and i am outrunning cars that have ran 13.3 to 13.5's Is there any block codes or anything i can look at to see what the difference is? or is it really just a freak of nature? was the A4 offered with 3.42 gears on the Z28 model? I just want to know for general knowledge and to determine if i have a factory freak?

Re: Factory Freak?

As a rule, I'd consider the real "factory freaks" to be the 100% bone stock cars, running street tires, nothing, I mean NOTHING done to them, that run into the 12's.....pretty much 12.anything! Low 13's are pretty common, mid-high 13's are "average", and 14's are in the "below average" category. Also, in terms of dyno #'s, ~300 RWHP (~295 - 305) is about "average", while cars that put in the range of ~315 RWHP or better are probably among the "freaks".

Re: Factory Freak?

Sorry, forgot to mention the gears.....autos had the option of either 2.73's or 3.23's. 6-speeds came with 3.42's (no option). Check your driver's door for the RPO code:

GU2 = 2.73's
GU5 = 3.23's
GU6 = 3.42's

Re: Factory Freak?

Some '01-'02 LS1 F-bodies came with an LS6 block but I highly doubt that it makes much of a difference (I've seen no evidence that it does). Search the forum if you want to find out more info.

And beating a car that ran whatever time is not an accurate way to determine what your car runs...neither is making some pulls on a dyno. If you want to know exactly what your car runs, go to a track and make a few passes.

While I do believe that some F-bodies are just plain faster than others...most of it has to do with good driving, good weather and a good track...not that your LS1 is making 10-15 more HP than the average LS1.

Like the other guys said, don't take anyone's word for what they say they run.

Go to the track and try real hard to get a good time and let us know how you did.

Do you guys know if any A4s have brokens into the 12s bone stock?

Re: Factory Freak?

I think a factory freaks is an LS1 that can run a 12 second 1/4 mile time bone stock or with common every day mininum modifications like lid and exhaust but nothing else. In a sense every car is different, if you put the same catback on two LS1s they wotn sound the same and if you out a cam and head combo on two different cars, one may gain a second and one may gain 3 tenths until they are tuneing. Which i think is the secret to a factory freak. SOme LS1s dont like stock tuneing as much as others. Thats my guess on why you see a few in 12s, 13s and high 13s and even low 14s.

Re: Factory Freak?

Factory freaks don't exist. Negative DAs, well prepped tracks and good drivers do exist, however.

I don't know...mine might be a bit of a factory freak. Though it didn't put down anything spectacular on the dyno.

Yup, they don't exist, its just all dyno's are not created equal.

Oh, but all LS1's ARE created "equal"?!

I guarantee you if you lined up a bunch of bone stock LS1's with equal mileage on them, on the SAME dyno, SAME day, there would be differences of HP in the range of ~20 rwhp, no problem. Whether it's 'cause one car was built on a Tuesday, and another on a Friday, there ARE differences between 2 "equal" cars, and sometimes there are those few that just out-perform all the rest...it's a proven fact (my Dad is a mechanic, and worked in a truck shop with a dyno.....he said they would put trucks on the dyno and have #'s as far apart as ~40 rwhp on brand new 400 HP trucks --- I'm talking about freight trucks with big Cummins diesels in them).

Re: Factory Freak?

Maybe they've already been broken in? I know for a fact a 600 mile LS1 will dyno lower than one with 7000 miles. Their all the same engine and yes their will be some variances between them, but come on, a freak? Its all driver skill at the track. Take my cousin, he can't take his 00 trans am past 14.2 because he is a moron.
